  Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital has been monitoring and preparing for the situation involving the new coronavirus (COVID-19). Our staff have been meeting regularly and in conjunction with the Butler County Health Department, Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the CDC to review current information and recommendations. If you are experiencing any signs of mild to severe respiratory illness, including fever, cough and shortness of breath, please CALL your healthcare provider to discuss recommendations BEFORE traveling to a health care facility or doctor’s office. Calling your healthcare provider FIRST ensures that appropriate protective equipment (such as masks) can be used upon your arrival for your safety and the safety of the public and healthcare workers. If there is a symptomatic patient at SBAMH, the guidance of the CDC will be followed. SBA staff are trained, equipped and capable of caring for patients with infectious diseases such as COVID19.

Through this partnership, the SBAMH Foundation will provide the vaccinations for the uninsured, and the Health Department will provide for the insured as well as the staffing and supplies.   Low Dose CT Chest Screening – In the past, most lung cancers have been caught in later stages, which make it more difficult to treat. With the Low Dose CT Chest Screening offered at Susan B. Allen, it allows lung cancer to be caught at an earlier stage, making it easier to treat. The lung cancer scan uses a lower dose of radiation due to ability of the technologists to cone down the x-rays around the lungs.

  MRIs or Magnetic Resonance Images let doctors see inside your body to identify a wide variety of possible medical conditions—all without exposure to X-rays. • Mammography
  When digital mammography equipment detects abnormalities in the breast, a biopsy is generally the next step to determine if the abnormality is cancerous. Before the availability of stereotactic breast biopsy, a surgical biopsy was the most common option.

  Lindsay, an avid runner and mother of two, was only 35 when she diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. At Susan B. Allen, she received aggressive therapies to attack the cancer, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. After the first 12-week round of chemotherapy, Lindsay’s pathology report came back clear.

  Working in tandem with the diagnostic imaging department, the Susan B. Allen Cancer Center provides the latest in radiation treatments, including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and a respiratory gating system. IMRT enables physicians to direct the beam therapy with more precision to a tumor. The respiratory gating system allows the radiation treatment to follow the patient's breathing patterns. These two systems together enable the maximum radiation treatment to the tumor while protecting the surrounding healthy tissue.

  Dr. Fejfar (pronounced "fay-fer") joins SBA from Coffey Health System in Burlington, KS, having previously practiced at the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center in Manhattan, KS. He received his medical degree from the University of South Dakota, School of Medicine; he served a transitional residency at the University of South Dakota, Sioux Falls; and an orthopedic residency at the University of Kansas, School of Medicine, Wichita. He completed a fellowship in Total Joint Arthroplasty at the Kansas Joint Replacement Institute in Wichita and later completed a fellowship in Young Adult Hip and Reconstruction in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Fejfar is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
