  While most tick bites are harmless, several species can cause life-threatening diseases. Tickborne diseases include anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Colorado tick fever, and Powassan encephalitis. Two of the most well-known diseases are Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease. Ticks can also transmit tularemia (a plague-like disease in rodents that can be transmitted to man), relapsing fever, and ehrlichiosis (an abrupt illness consisting of fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss).

• Emergency Care
  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 8,000 snake bites occur in the United States each year. Even a bite from a so-called “harmless” snake can cause infection or allergic reaction in some people. For maximum safety, treat all snake bites as if they were venomous and get to a hospital emergency room as quickly as possible, especially if you are unsure of the exact type of snake responsible for the bite. With the correct treatment (or antivenin), severe illness and/or death can be prevented. (Antivenin, also called antivenom, is an antitoxin specific to the venom of a particular animal or insect).

  Sixty Oklahoma hospitals recently met a challenge from the Oklahoma Hospital Association to achieve a health care worker influenza vaccination rate of 92 percent or higher during the 2013-2014 flu season.

  Dr. Hensley has signed an agreement to join the office of Kin Whittington, DO and provide Obstetric and Gynecology services here in Durant. Dr. Hensley will begin seeing patients on August 1 and appointments are now being accepted. Dr. Hensley will provide a broad range of general obstetric and gynecology services from adolescent to post –menopausal women.

  Dr. Hensley received her Medical Degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in May of 2008 and completed her Undergraduate studies at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Hensley completed her Residency at Summa-Akron City Hospital in Ohio and also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Hensley is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology; American Medical Association; American Association of Gynecologic Laparascopists; and the American Society for Colposcopy & Cervical Pathology.
