- Dental ExaminationThe first step in any smile makeover is a thorough dental examination to make sure that your cosmetic problems really are just that, and not a sign of underlying dental disease. Once your health has been established, your smile can be cosmetically enhanced in a variety of ways.
- X-rays
- Teeth CleaningOften times, with a manual toothbrush we tend to “scrub” our teeth, which can lead to problems such as gum recession or tooth wear. quip uses a nice, mild sonic vibration that along with slow, short stokes of the brush head on all surfaces of the teeth provides an effective, gentle cleaning experience.
- Dental SealantsWe provide a variety of dental services from preventive care to advanced restorative procedures such as same-day crowns with our Cerec. No procedure is too big or too small from fillings, bridges and dental implants to root canals, sealants extractions and beyond. We can enhance your smile with Invisalign or techniques such as whitening. We also provide solutions for sleep apnea and TMD.
- Fillings
- Resin CompositeBonding uses tooth-colored materials to replace missing tooth structure or hide cosmetically unappealing minor defects in a tooth — chips, discoloration, and even minor spacing irregularities. Bonding materials are called “composite resins” because they contain a mixture of plastic and glass, which adds strength and translucency. The composite actually bonds, or becomes one, with the rest of the tooth.
- VeneersWhat makes a smile beautiful? That’s a complex question, but some qualities of a lovely smile are immediately identifiable: good tooth color, shape and alignment are a few of the most important ones. If your teeth could use improvement in any of these categories, porcelain veneers could be just what you’re looking for.
- CrownsThe biggest advantage of the CEREC is the time savings. We can make a crown or bridge in one appointment, compared to a lab-created crown that requires two visits at least two weeks apart. One ninety minute appointment is all it takes from start to finish to own a strong and beautiful crown. You only come to our office once for the crown – that means one visit, one day with time off work, not two. The time savings for us includes confirming one appointment, cleaning one room and not recementing crowns between temporary and final crown visits. It may not sound like a whole lot of time savings for us, but it is.
- BridgesWe’ve been talking a lot about our CEREC lately both in the office and on Facebook. CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics or CEramic REConstruction. This two part system has revolutionized crowns and bridges in our office. Just this week, we had a technician out to perform some routine service our milling unit. He told us we had over 49,000 minutes on this machine. In 11 years, that’s a lot of run time!
- Dental BondingWe are proud of the ways in which dentistry can restore broken or decayed teeth to full beauty and function. One of the easiest and least expensive ways of doing this is with dental bonding.
- Root Canal TreatmentFillings do just what the name implies — seal a small hole in your tooth, i.e., a cavity, caused by decay. This prevents the decay (a bacteria-induced infection) from spreading further into your tooth and, if untreated, continue on to the sensitive inner pulp (nerve) tissue located in the root canal. Should that happen, you would need root canal treatment.
- Deep CleaningSome of the other “hidden” jobs of being the owner at Pike Lake Dental Center include plowing the walkway between the employees parking lot and the office, deep cleaning the office, salting and shoveling the sidewalks with each new snowfall, contracting maintenance services for the office, changing light bulbs, hiring staff, putting up and taking down Christmas decorations, making purchase decisions, and every day business decisions. These may not seem like large jobs, and most of them aren’t, but they help create a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year job.
- DenturesWe had a patient stop in our office the other day asking how to clean her TAP 3 sleep apnea device. She said it was starting to smell and taste bad after wearing it nightly for a few months. It’s easy to sympathize – those qualities are not incentives to wear the device every night. One staff member suggested a denture cleaner and the patient said she remembered being cautioned against that. So what is the answer?
- OverdenturesDentures are just one option for replacing missing teeth; some of the others include fixed bridgework and dental implants. Each method has its particular pluses and minuses, which should be carefully considered. There are also several varieties of dentures available to address specific issues, from partial dentures to implant-supported overdentures. The best option for you will depend on your individual situation.
- Dental ImplantsHave you ever wondered what a dental implant is? Maybe you’ve had a tooth removed and your dentist has offered implants as a replacement option. In this blog post, I will focus on discussing the components that make up an implant restoration.

- Tooth Extractions
- OrthodonticsYou can cut a cake with dental floss! We received this beautiful cake from Arrowhead Orthodontics this winter and Nancy, one of our dental assistants, cut the cake with dental floss. She wound the floss around her fingers as if she were going to floss her teeth, then gently sliced through the cake. It worked really well and was fun to try. You can’t use this trick on a cake in a pan, but it works great for layered cakes like this. This floss hack works fantastic with soft cheeses too.
- Invisalign OrthodonticsAt Pike Lake Dental Center, we offer free Invisalign consultations. Yes, I said FREE. You’ll find no pressure or sales pitch from our staff. We simply want to help you find out if Invisalign is a treatment option for you. If we discover Invisalign is not the best option, we are happy to refer you to one of our fantastic local orthodontists for traditional orthodontic care. If Invisalign is an option, we are happy to help you begin your journey to straighter, more beautiful teeth.
- BracesMy 12 year old daughter started her journey with braces in March of 2017. Since then, she’s had to learn how to take care of her teeth a little differently than she did before starting orthodontia. Of my three kids, Katie is the child who thrives on routine the most. She packs her school backpack exactly the same way every day. She keeps her bedroom and locker orderly. She arranges her pillows “just so” on her bed each night. So when she started ortho, I expected her to continue with her regular brushing routine, which she did.
- Teeth WhiteningA few months ago, I received a charcoal whitening kit in my Fab, Fit, Fun box. Being a dentist’s wife, I am all about teeth and products to keep them looking and feeling healthy. This product intrigued me. I’ve seen many advertisements on social media for charcoal whitening and have been interested in it. So, when a charcoal whitening kit was mailed to me without any effort on my part, I knew I needed to at least give it a try.
- General DentistryDr. Newton received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. After receiving his degree, Dr. Newton had a unique opportunity to work as a dental assistant in Helena, MT with one of the foremost laser dentists in the country. It was in Montana that Dr. Newton’s love for general dentistry came alive. The ability to provide comprehensive care for patients of all ages led him into the profession and is what fuels his passion today. Following a formative year in Montana, immersing himself in dentistry and alpine skiing, Dr. Newton attended the University of Minnesota to obtain his dental degree. Dr. Newton practiced dentistry in the Twin Cities for 2 years, then an additional 7 years in Eau Claire, Wisconsin before moving to Duluth.
