- Veterinary OphthalmologyOne of our clients came in with her cat after she observed him breathing faster than normal. This particular patient is currently being treated for renal failure, but had not shown any increased respiratory rates yet. Cats in renal failure often have high blood pressure, which if left too high for too long, can lead to lethargy and sudden blindness. In order to get a better picture of the cat’s current condition Doctor Neumeister decided to measure his blood pressure.

- Heart Disease TreatmentThe first step in treating heartworm disease is to stabilize your dog’s condition. This may involve hospitalization and treatment for any secondary illnesses, such as anemia or heart failure. Once your dog is stable, they will be started on a course of medication to kill the adult heartworms. This medication is typically given over a period of several months. In rare cases, surgery will be required to remove the worms.
- Kidney Disease TreatmentBorrelia burgdorfer i. Deer ticks carry these bacteria, transmitting them to the animal while sucking its blood. The tick must be attached to the cat for about 48 hours in order to transmit the bacteria to the animal’s bloodstream. If the tick is removed before this, transmission will usually not occur. Common signs of Lyme disease include lameness, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and joints, and a reduced appetite. In severe cases, animals may develop kidney disease, heart conditions, or nervous system disorders. Oral antibiotics are used to treat Lyme disease. There is, however, currently no Lyme disease vaccine for cats.
