  After returning to Dubuque, Iowa in 1953, Frederick and Marion built the small family practice into the current Fuerste Eye Clinic.

  Dr. Ploessl is excited to be a member of the great team at Fuerste Eye Clinic. He is a native of Dubuque and is especially excited to have the opportunity to provide eye care to the communities of the Tri-State Area. His interests include ocular disease treatment and management including dry eye, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. His interests outside of optometry include playing and watching sports, especially basketball and football.

  In 1953, Frederick Fuerste, Jr., MD joined his father’s practice. He had received undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Iowa. He interned at The Cook County Hospital and Jail in Chicago, Illinois. He was a naval physician at the Veteran’s Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he met his wife, Marion Fuerste, a registered operating room nurse. She received her nursing degree from Augustan School of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois. They married in 1948 and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Frederick completed his Ophthalmology residency at Milwaukee County. Later, after residency, they headed to Washington University in St. Louis, where Frederick completed fellowship training.

  Dr. Tyler Risma and Dr. Luke Ploessl see patients at our Grant Regional office. Dr. Risma performs cataract surgery at Grant Regional Health Center.

  Dr. Janson grew up in Mason City, IA before attending Iowa State University and graduating summa cum laude in Microbiology and Genetics. While in college, he was a summer research intern at the National Institutes of Health. He then completed his medical training at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD before returning home to Iowa and completing his Internal Medicine internship and Ophthalmology residency training at the University of Iowa.

  In 1921, Frederick Fuerste, Sr., MD received his medical degree from the State University of Iowa. His wife, June Brown Fuerste, received her nursing degree from the same institution. Dr. Fuerste, Sr. went on to complete residencies from the University of Chicago in Otolaryngology in 1929 and in Ophthalmology in 1930. They settled in Dubuque, Iowa and began a thriving Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat practice in 1932.
