General Info
Not too long ago, I made a blog posting about how EFT stands for “Emotional Freedom Techniques,” but in that I didn’t describe what EFT is specifically. I am frequently asked this question, so I thought I would try to explain it here.EFT is like acupuncture without the needles, or traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy (like therapy with a psychiatrist) using the body. Put another way, EFT uses your words about a problem (my chocolate craving, my fear of public speaking, my anxiety over leaving my house, my depression over the divorce) and adds to that gentle tapping on specific points on the body. There are a series of points we tap in succession, all the while speaking the words (that vary depending on the issue at hand) that connect us to the problem. Our bodies are filled with meridians, which is a way of describing energetic lines, that function best when they are clear of blockages. When they get blocked, because we have experienced a trauma, then we feel negative emotion, like anxiety, fear, depression, cravings/addiction, allergies and so on. EFT – connecting with the problem and tapping on specific points on the body – helps us to release those blockages and let go of our problems. Generally EFT works in just a few minutes, though it can take some time for deep or complex issues to resolve themselves. The science behind EFT is catching up to what we have known for twenty years, and what the Chinese and other older civilizations have known for thousands of years: the mind controls the body. EFT is a way to help the mind control the body. What’s stopping you from trying?
