An internet search for accommodations while visiting family in Watertown, NY, turned up this absolutely delightful B&B. There are so many superlatives that I don't know where to begin. Location - Dexter is a small, quiet, village, but accessible to many locations of interest. It's a few short miles to Watertown and close to the Watertown Airport. Historic Sacketts Harbor with its battleground and village center with wonderful shops and restaurants (Tin Pan Galley is highly recommended) is a short 10 minute drive. It's a bit further, but still near to, Alexandria Bay and the 1000 Islands/St. Lawrence River. Fort Drum is just the other side of Watertown. Accommodations - I was in the Maple Room, a large room on the front of the house, with a king size bed, on which there was the most comfortable mattress I've ever encountered. There was also a chaise for lounging and watching TV. The large bathroom was complete with the antique clawfoot tub, original to the house. Rooms were furnished with Victorian antiques and included many homey touches. Chocolates and blackberry brandy were on a dresser for late evening relaxation. I glanced in other rooms, and all seemed roomy and comfortable and also had ensuite facilities. Owner/Hosts - Deborah and Robert were meant for this business, after pursuing other careers in NYC. Their motto is "We aim to spoil." And spoil us they did. Every little request was met with a resounding, "yes, of course." Breakfast selections are made from a menu (usually the evening before) and include such delicious items as gingerbread waffle, pumpkin pancakes, crepes stuffed with fruit or eggs, oatmeal with all the trimingss, or your choice of eggs with tasty homefries. Sides of bacon or sausage are available, and they accommodated a member of my party by offering a turkey sausage alternative. Each breakfast began with juice and/or fresh fruit. Coffee, ground fresh each morning, was plentiful and most delicious. Breakfast was served in a wonderfully restored dining room, with colorful stained glass windows. The owners are most gracious and happy to share their home and stories from their "previous" lives. Or, if you prefer, you can read quietly in the Victorian parlor while activity takes place in other parts of the house. At this writing, there are some areas of the 1855 House still undergoing renovation/redecoration. There should soon be an additional reading room, behind the largest pocket door I've ever seen, and an old carriage house that is almost ready as an efficiency apartment with loft, that would sleep 4 - 6 for longer stays. My only regret was that I couldn't linger a few more days to sample additional breakfast choices, sleep soundly on superb bedding, and enjoy the company of the owners.

A few weeks ago a co-worker and I were driving from West Point to Watertown New York. We had been on the road all day and began calling hotels for a room. All were full. Luckily, we called the Dexter 1855 house! Bob and Deb were amazing. From the minute Bob answered the phone we knew we would be fine. It was getting late but that didn't deter Bob and Deb from welcoming us to their home. They waited for our late arrival and offered us food and beverage. They couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming! The B&B is just wonderful. I was so tired that I didn't pay attention to the name of the room I stayed in, but the bed was amazingly comfortable. The robes were soft and luxurious. You could tell that every detail was considered in this B&B. Breakfast was awesome! Deb is a great baker and we were very contented when we left. It takes special people to operate a B&B and Bob and Deb are just that. Although we were there for a morning business meeting, the location is perfect for leaf viewing, boating, and fishing. Just a great surprise to a hohum business trip.

The Innkeepers, Bob and Debbie, were the perfect host and hostess. What a warm welcome...Bob, being the perfect Concierge, arranged a reservation at a near by gormet restaurant, Tin Pan Galley, which he highly recommended. We had an excellent meal in a comfortable setting of an outside garden with lots of flowers and candlelight. Returning to Dexter 1855 House, our room(s) were generous with a king size bed in one room and a single bed in the other. Beautiful Victorian furniture and decor with a private bath providing every modern convenience. Brandy waited on the night stand for our night cap before bed. We ordered breakfast from a variety of offerings including a starter, main course and tea, coffee and juice. Breakfast was served on the porch with a fresh bouquet of roses on the table. Debbie is an excellent cook. The guest book in the room said "the French Toast was the best ever." We tried it and there is no doubt about it being the best. I think it qualifies as "French Toast to die for." Debbie generously shared her recipe with me. We found Dexter 1855 House after learning the hotels of choice in Watertown were full. How lucky could we get? Chance took us to Dexter this trip, however, next time Dexter will be our intended stop!

I booked the Maple Room for my husband and myself. I wanted to have a nice romantic getaway while he was home on his R&R from deployment. The Dexter House is beautifully decorated and our room was spacious, clean, and elegant! The bathroom in our room is very nice with a new walk in shower. The bed was very soft and comfortable. We enjoyed the chocolates in the room when we arrived late in the evening. We slept in and were excited to head down to breakfast around 8:30 in the morning. Gingerbread waffles with syrup and walnuts and real whipped cream- absolutely delicious! My husband enjoyed his eggs over easy with sweet potato hash. Deb and Bob pay attention to detail and welcome each guest warmly and are very accommodating! We look forward to returning again soon!

I'm still relatively new to B&B's, and was impressed. Great breakfast, and beautiful rooms.

What a beautiful, welcoming place. I travel just about every week for work and it was a treat to stay here! Deborah and Robert are kind, considerate and gracious hosts. The rooms were very clean and adorable, the beds are extremely comforatable, and the breakfast was amazing. This is the first time I wish I had longer to stay away from home..I would have loved to soak up the atmosphere and chat more and then snooze a bit.

I stayed in 3 different local B&Bs in the Watertown area during my recent business/leisure trip. Staying at the Dexter 1855 was one of the highlights. My partner and I could not get over how comfy we felt from the moment we walked into Deb and Robert's home. They were welcoming, kind, caring, excellent hosts. This couple loves what they do and they do it so very well. You will not be disappointed in your stay at the Dexter 1855 house. It truly is a lovely experience from the room to the wonderful breakfast, you won't be disappointed.

From my first phone call to checkout, deb and robert made me feel like family, in the most positive sense of the word. And wait til you taste debs cooking!! Professional yet laid back at the same time, the innkeepers could not be more welcoming. Rooms are spacious and and quiet and mine had a bath and flat screen tv. Can't wait to go back!

i.e., A local favorite, or highlySingle girl (25) travelling on budget, stayed at dexter house for 4 nights. Was a bit warey after reading bad reveiws, but people really over exaggerate. I had a great time. Sure, its not the Hilton, its a hostel. I was very impressed at how clean everything was. Stayed in an all girl dorm room (#1317). Has wooden floors, windows, bunkbeds were squeeky but not really a problem for me, other roomies seemed friendly. People complain about the cold? Perhaps try turning the Air Con off! Staff were helpful, had no problem with payment, (expect a $10 cash key deposit refunable). There are lockers in the rooms so that you can keep your stuff safe (need own padlock). Recieved clean linen & blanket on arrival. Never saw any bugs and didn't catch bed bugs..all very very clean. The ensuite bathroom was small but good size. water not the hottest - but a luke warm shower never killed anyone! Dexter House is in a residential area, so lots of normal people with prams
