- FraudOur firm is fully capable of representing clients in both simple and complex litigation. The firm has extensive experience representing its retirement system and retiree health care clients in all areas of litigation including without limitation: FOIA disputes, benefit claims, securities fraud litigation, and class action litigation, in both state and federal trial and appellate courts. The firm has represented clients who are parties to lawsuits both as plaintiffs and defendants, and is able to effectively represent the Board of Trustees and the VEBA in either situation.
- ManslaughterThe Retirement Board denied a surviving spouse’s application for survivorship benefits under Michigan’s slayer statute. The surviving spouse had been convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of her husband. The Court upheld the Retirement Board’s decision because voluntary manslaughter is an intentional killing under Michigan law and is sufficient to invoke application of Michigan’s slayer statute and the federal common law slayer’s rule.
