Upon graduation from law school, he served as a judicial law clerk for Justice J.L. Larson of the Iowa Supreme Court. In 1983, Guy was appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa. Among the cases he prosecuted were the largest insurance fraud in Iowa history, the then largest drug case in Iowa history, and the largest tax evasion case in Iowa history.
