- Dental CareAccording to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three. Ignoring oral and dental care can contribute to more than bad breath—pets can develop serious heart, lung and kidney problems. Smith Animal Clinic veterinarians will perform dental exams and expertly clean your pet’s teeth and extract diseased teeth. We can show you how to brush your pet’s teeth as well!
- VaccinationAt Smith Animal Clinic, our mission is to provide the highest quality veterinary care to our Northwest Indiana and Illinois patients while serving our clients with compassion and professionalism. Our fourth generation family owned veterinary clinic first opened in 1909 and offers routine wellness visits, pet vaccinations and health services for dogs, cats, and horses. Full service hospital capabilities include dentistry, orthopedics, radiology, hospitalization and equine reproduction.
- Behavioral CounselingA well-behaved dog is the product of teaching him to understand what is expected; you are responsible to teach him what behavior is or is not tolerated. As the owner of a new puppy, training is necessary and mutually beneficial. Young puppies are a veritable behavioral blank slate. If you are able to take advantage of this special time and begin temperament and basic obedience training using gentle, positive reinforcement methods, you are much more likely to end up with a well-behaved, sociable companion for life.
- Comprehensive ExaminationAn annual physical examination and a tailored vaccination program for your pet is the most effective preventative health care you can provide your pet. Many dangerous and life-threatening diseases can be safely and effective prevented with vaccinations.
- Parasites Treatment and ControlZoonoses, also referred to as zoonotic diseases, are diseases that can be transmitted to you or your children from your pets. Rabies is the most well-known disease of this type. Intestinal parasites can also be transmitted to people; these can have severe consequences to adults and horrific consequences to children.
- Behavioral Disorder TreatmentFeline Distemper/Upper Respiratory (FVRCP) begin at age six to eight weeks; booster every four weeks until at or older than four months of age
- Pain ManagementSince a pet can’t tell us where and how much it hurts, we rely on our training and experience when managing a dog’s or cat’s pain. Our veterinarians will prescribe medication for post-surgical patients as well as medications to ease the chronic pain of your arthritic or ailing pet.
- Vomiting Treatment
- Diarrhea Treatment
- Leptospirosis TreatmentEven house cats can obtain parasites from house plants. A recent study showed that 15 percent of all commercial potting soil is contaminated with roundworm eggs. Leptospirosis, a bacteria found in stagnant water, may be obtained by non-vaccinated pets. Raccoons, opossums, mice, and even squirrels shed this bacteria in their urine. Bacteria ingested if a pet drinks from a puddle or pond can cause severe kidney damage.
- Parvovirus Infection TreatmentDAPP (Distemper/Adenovirus/Parainfluenza/Parvovirus) begin at age six to eight weeks, then a booster every four weeks until at or older than four months of age
- Thyroid Disease Treatment
- Heart Disease TreatmentEighty percent of all dogs have some form of dental disease and gum disease can be very severe. Dental disease affects much more than fresh breath. It frequently leads to more serious health problems such as liver, kidney and heart disease. One new development is the prevention of plaque using a barrier sealant gel. This is applied by the veterinarian and then continued at home. Watch this video to learn more.
- Kidney Disease TreatmentSome holiday foods, however, can cause much more than an upset stomach in your pet. Garlic and onions are members of the allium family and, if eaten in large quantities, can cause hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder that causes red blood cells to burst. Raisins and grapes are also toxic to pets and have been linked to kidney failure.

- Spaying and Neutering
- Laboratory ServicesA heartworm test, which is a blood test, is required each year in order to purchase heartworm preventative and to insure that your pet does not have heartworm disease. Giving heartworm preventive to a pet that has this disease is dangerous to the pet.
- X-Ray
- MicrochippingWe recommend microchipping for all pets, even those who seldom leave your house. This inexpensive procedure is simple (it involves a quick injection of a chip about the size of a grain of rice) under the loose skin between the shoulder blades) and never needs to be replaced.
- BoardingPets who are recovering from a surgery or medical procedures, are on medication or otherwise need special attention will receive the care they deserve while being boarded at Smith Animal Clinic.
- Senior Pet CarePets suffer the same diseases and problems that we associate with human senior citizens: arthritis, mobility limitations, chronic pain, and cognitive dysfunction. We’re experienced in caring for elder pets, including end of life support. We can recommend diet and supplements, as well as exercise to limit your pet’s discomfort and extend quality of life.
