James W. Smith Elementary School is a learning center that is governed by Craven County Schools, which operates various elementary, middle and high schools. The school serves more than 650 students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. Its staff includes technology facilitators, social workers, psychologists, nurses, guidance counselors, and speech and language pathologists. The school offers a range of general academic programs, including gifted and character education and accelerated reader. It features a library, cafeteria, and computer and science laboratories. The school also provides various cocurricular activities, such as art, music, physical education, student council, newspaper and drama.
