The Cortez Police Department safeguards lives and property and provides safety and security to the citizens. It operates administration, communication, patrol and investigation divisions. The department operates a special response team that responds to critical incidents. The Cortez Police Department hosts a victim assistance program that provides appropriate agency referral and immediate on-scene crisis intervention, as well as acts as a liaison between police officers and victims. It has a communication center that responds to various police, fire, and medical emergency and nonemergency cases. The department conducts the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program. The Cortez Police Department also supports Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is a classroom program that helps to prevent drug abuse and violence among children.
