The Lexington County Sheriff s Department is a full-service, internationally accredited law enforcement agency that serves more than 235,000 citizens of Lexington County in South Carolina. The department is responsible for the operation and security of a 700-plus-bed detention center that serves as a primary holding facility for individuals arrested and jailed within Lexington County. With over 400 full-and part-time employees, its Crime Prevention Unit administers Project I.D., which is a nationally recognized program that permanently marks valuables with numbers designating the name and address of owners to return lost and stolen properties when recovered. The Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Unit of the Lexington County Sheriff s Department locates, documents, collects and preserves crime scene evidences. Its Major Crimes Division is responsible for investigating violent crimes, such as murder, rape, robbery and criminal domestic violence. The division is comprised of specialized units that perform tasks related to criminal domestic violence prosecution, sex offender registration, forensic drug and chemical analysis, victim assistance services, crime scene investigations and latent fingerprint comparisons. In addition, the department operates a training division that conducts ongoing sessions related to the use of firearms, expandable batons, oleoresin capsicum sprays and defensive tactics. The Lexington County Sheriff s Department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
