The Police Department is affiliated with the city of Columbia, S.C. Its community policing focuses on the crime prevention activities of the community at the grassroot level. The department works in close partnership with the members of the community and city government; and law enforcement agencies for public protection and services. Its Citizens Police Academy is a free evening course designed to familiarize citizens with various aspects of community law enforcement, administration, internal policies and law and ethical conduct of police department. Its crime prevention programs include security surveys, personal safety and neighborhood crime watch programs. The department has more than 350 officers and civilians to assist in crime prevention and public safety.
