The Missouri Department of Higher Education is responsible for the state system of higher education. It serves more than 360,000 students through over 10 public four-year colleges and universities and nearly 20 two-year colleges. It also submits a unified budget request for public higher education to the governor and the Missouri General Assembly. The Missouri Department of Higher Education is responsible for the administration of a statewide postsecondary technical education program. The department establishes guidelines to promote student transfer among institutions. It also approves new degree programs offered by public colleges and universities. The department administers financial assistance programs for students. It also has more than 25 independent colleges and universities and over 150 proprietary schools.
