Columbia Insurance Group and its affiliated companies have a history that began in 1874 as a part of the growing mutual insurance movement in the Midwest. It began as the Home Mutual Insurance Company to protect homes from fire in rural Missouri. The company emphasizes growing its small and midsized commercial lines book, and it also provides the farm and personal lines market with insurance coverage. In June 2006, Columbia Insurance Group was rated A- by A.M. Best, the largest and longest established company to issue in-depth reports and financial-strength ratings about insurance organizations. Columbia Insurance Group offers products in Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Tennessee through the independent insurance agency mechanism.
