Unfortunately, we just saw this review above. We are in the midst of having our taxes done by the Shafer Group and have already experienced two bait-and-switch tactics: 1) We had an appointment with one of the managing CPAs of the firm, but were redirected unexpectedly to one of her employees when we went in for our appointment. 2) We were told during our appointment that the fee to do our taxes would be $750, only to be told today (now 12 days from the tax deadline) that the fee would be $200 more, even though we didn't present ANY additional complexities in the intervening time period. This was obviously an issue of the CPA in question not accurately assessing the time it would take to complete our return, and now their management is trying to pass this additional cost on to us. I am self-employed but I don't think we have a super complicated financial situation, and I'm astonished that a company that is trying to establish trust with us (according to their web site) would do business in this manner. We are awaiting the completion of our return and news about how they intend to handle the cost matter. I'll update this review accordingly.
UPDATE: The Shafer Group finished our return a couple of days later and never again mentioned the additional cost. They charged us $750 total. We didn't appreciate that they tried to change the fee on us, but after raising the issue of why, we do appreciate that they didn't fight us on it. I also wanted to mention that we were asked multiple times for more pieces of data that were needed to complete our return after our initial meeting. Again, I don't feel like we have a complicated financial situation, so it didn't make sense to me that we could not get a complete list of things that would be needed directly after the first meeting where we explained - in full - all of the matters that would affect our taxes. Personally, I think this was due to the inexperience of the person doing our return, and I go back to the bait and switch we experienced when we were not handled by the person we expected. I hope anyone looking for information on this firm finds this review useful.
The Shafer group is a serious let down as far as skill, professionalism, and quality, oh and don't forget price. Staff is seriously of low quality and not of substance for their supposed titles. Rates are extremely high, work performed by underqualified individuals and the tax work itself is questionalbe. I have talked with two others who used The Shafer Group who have been audited only to have to pay the IRS and of course pay the Shafer Group also. Very questionable practices. I can't believe he is in business. Stay Away.
Leave it to the Shafer group to charge you out the Yin-Yang for their poor accounting and tax skills. When they make the mistake they charge you to fix their mistake. And not to mention those little illegalities they pull to get more money for us (the client) so they can take it all in fees. It is no wonder this is considered the worst firm in Colorado Spings.
