- Mohs SurgeryThe Mohs technique is a complex procedure that combines the surgical excision of skin cancers with immediate microscopic examination of the tumor margins. The visible skin cancer is first removed by the Mohs surgeon. The tissue is then marked and divided into sections. Slides are rapidly prepared from the fresh tissue by our histotechnologists while the patient waits. The slides are examined by the Mohs surgeon who can then determine if any tumor is left behind while pinpointing its exact location. This allows the surgeon to remove only the involved skin, minimizing the amount of normal tissue removed. Since some skin cancers are extensive, multiple tissue layers may be required for complete tumor removal. Each layer takes approximately 30-60 minutes. Mohs surgery is done under local anesthesia for maximal patient safety. The patient is awake and alert throughout the procedure.
