Established in 1899, Veterans of Foreign Wars is an organization of war veterans involved in ensuring veterans' rights, promoting patriotism, performing community services and advocating for a strong national defense. Based in Clinton, Ark., the organization provides services to veterans and their dependents, assisting them in acquiring filing claims and more. Its endeavors include memorial fund-raising efforts, sponsorship of special events for disabled veterans, offering troop support and more. Additionally, Veterans of Foreign Wars helps victims of natural disasters, supports volunteering and youth activities as well as offers scholarship programs in the communities where its posts are located. Some of the organization's work includes establishing the Veteran Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, developing the national cemetery system and improving Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers services for women veterans, among others.
