- ElectrocardiogramPrior to HIFU, patients usually have lab work (Complete Blood Count (CBC), Complete Medical Panel, Urinary Analysis with culture if indicated by your physician) and an EKG in preparation for undergoing anesthesia. If the patient has any significant medical history, he should see his cardiologist or primary physician. The HIFU procedure itself causes no significant bleeding or swings in blood pressure, etc. A nurse will send detailed information after the procedure has been scheduled regarding diet, medications and any additional lab work or tests that may be required.
- Urinary IncontinenceSudden Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is a condition among women who have poor bladder control and who loose urine in certain stress situations like coughing, sneezing or exercising. To help correct this problem and restore bladder control, surgical procedures called urethral sling procedures can be used to create a sling around the neck of the bladder and the urethra (tube that carries urine from the bladder) to keep the bladder closed during stress situations.

- UltrasoundHIFU is a precise and targeted therapy that reduces the risk of complications and impact to quality of life caused by surgery and radiation. HIFU uses ultrasound energy, or sound waves, to heat and destroy specifically targeted areas of tissue. During HIFU, the sound waves pass through healthy tissue without causing damage. However, at the focal point of the sound waves the tissue temperature rises rapidly to 90 degrees Celsius destroying the targeted tissue. The same principles are used when light is focused through a magnifying glass.
- MRIIn some cases, the entire prostate will be targeted, which would include the tumor as well as any other tissue in the prostate. Think of it as having the prostate removed, without a single incision. However, some physicians, who work with advanced, MRI- guided imaging for diagnosis, can determine the exact location of the tumor in the prostate and may use HIFU to only treat the tumor leaving other tissue in the prostate intact; this is referred to as partial tissue ablation, or focal therapy.
- X-Rays
- Computed TomographyThe simulation is a specialized radiation planning CT scan, which is performed while you are lying on your back on the simulation table. All of your pelvic organs are delineated and your pelvic anatomy is recreated in the computer in 3-D. Using all of this information, Dr. Field and radiation physicist will then work together to design the best IMRT treatment plan that optimizes the dose to the prostate and minimizes the dose to the bladder and rectum. The planning and quality assurance process may take several weeks to complete.
- ChemotherapyChemotherapy – As in the treatment of advanced bladder cancers, cisplatinum based chemotherapeutic regimens have been used in both a neoadjuvant and an adjuvant setting.
- Radiation Therapy“I was diagnosed by my long-time urologist who I had been seeing for 20 years,” said Larry. “He talked to me about the treatment options and I started making plans to have radiation therapy.”

- Laparoscopic SurgeryBoth minimally invasive surgical options require one or a few small incisions that doctors use to insert surgical equipment and a camera for viewing. In laparoscopic surgery, doctors use special long-handled tools to perform surgery while viewing magnified images from the laparoscope (camera) on a video screen.
- Skin CancerIt is estimated that approximately 200,000 new cases will be diagnosed each year. It is the most common non-skin cancer among men and more than 2 million men in the U.S. count themselves as prostate cancer survivors. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer death among men of all races.

- Physical TherapyThere are many different treatment options for pelvic organ prolapse that include both non-surgical and surgical treatments. Non-surgical treatment options include lifestyle and behavior changes, physical therapy or the use of a vaginal device (pessary). There are different types of pelvic organ prolapse surgeries, so it is important to discuss your options with your physician in detail to ensure that you find a treatment option that is right for you.
