He received the M.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he was selected as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. Following medical school, he completed an internship and specialty residency training in ophthalmology at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center where he served as Chief Resident in Ophthalmology. Dr. Korey then pursued further sub specialty training, concentrating in the treatment of glaucoma, at the internationally renowned Barnes Eye Hospital of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Following a surgical internship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, Dr. Sy completed his ophthalmology residency at the Cook County Hospital/John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago where he was recognized for outstanding research. Dr. Sy subsequently pursued further specialty training completing a fellowship in Diseases of the Cornea, Anterior Segment and Refractive Surgery with the Eye Consultants of Atlanta. Dr. Sy is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Sy is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.​
