- Primary CareEveryone who has diabetes should have a dilated eye exam at least once a year. This is not just a "glasses check". Because diabetes can damage retinal blood vessels, you need your eyes dilated so that your eye doctor can look for early signs of diabetic retinopathy. Without proper treatment, diabetic retinopathy can be a blinding disease. Initially there may be no changes in vision. However, even at this early stage, your eye doctor may detect retinal leakage or bleeding. If your eyes are affected, there are very effective treatments that can help you maintain or even restore the health of your eyes. Of course, good blood sugar control and following the recommendations of your primary care doctor is paramount.
- GlaucomaBeyond routine exams, we also provide additional services such as visual field testing and Optical Coherence Tomography for patients with glaucoma, and retinal photographs and angiograms for diabetics. We provide eye care for patients of any age, starting with infants and children as well as adults.

- Macular DegenerationMedical Eye Exam Coverage: If you have a medical eye condition (e.g., cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, dry eyes, and cornea problems) this examination will be billed to your medical insurance.
- Laser Eye SurgeryWhile all human eyes share the same basic anatomic structure, every eye is just a bit different in terms of size, depth, curvature of the cornea and other key features. This is why every eye must be carefully measured and mapped prior to cataract surgery. While these measurements have been routinely performed prior to surgery, the LenSx® laser uses a range of highly advanced technologies, including integrated optical coherence tomography (OCT), to capture incredibly precise, high-resolution images of your eyes. These images and the measurements and data they provide are then used to create a custom plan for your eye surgery.
- CataractsThey say your eyes are the window to your soul. For an ophthalmologist they can be the window to your health. Many medical conditions can manifest themselves through your eyes. For example, the blood vessels inside your eyes can be affected by high blood pressure, diabetes, and various autoimmune disorders such as lupus. Other autoimmune conditions can cause dry eyes or uveitis (inflammation inside the eyes). Increased pressure around the brain may cause swelling of your optic nerves. Even cataract formation can be a sign of diabetes in some patients.
- Cataract SurgeryOne of the most common problems we help our patients with is loss of sight from cataracts. Once cataracts start to cause significant loss of vision, cataract surgery is often used to restore visual function.
- Eye ExamPatient Responsibilities: Many insurance companies will not pay for a routine vision exam without separate vision coverage. It is your responsibility to check with your insurance company for proper coverage and to let us know before your eye examination. Please understand that each patient’s insurance coverage varies and that Medical & Surgical Eye Specialists cannot be held responsible for knowing every patient’s coverage.
