- GlaucomaIf you have glaucoma and medications and laser surgeries do not lower your eye pressure adequately, we may recommend a procedure called a trabeculectomy.
- OphthalmologyDiStefano Eye Center was founded in 1982 by Dr. Deborah DiStefano, who was also Chairperson of the Department of Ophthalmology at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. After 10 years, she elected to concentrate on her private practice and spend more time with family. Today, she maintains her educational involvement as an Assistant Clinical Instructor at the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine.
- Macular DegenerationCurrently, there is no cure for macular degeneration. But there are treatments and ways to reduce the risk of vision loss caused by the condition. A new retina treatment technology uses intravitreal injections of medications that target the disease. This has helped save vision for many people who had no other treatment options.
- Laser Eye SurgeryFor years, the only method of permanent vision correction that didn’t involve glasses or contact lenses was corrective laser eye surgery. With the advent of the Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), there is a new option to correct myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). The ICL is designed to be permanently implanted inside the eye behind the iris (colored portion of the eye), but resting in front of the natural crystalline lens. The lens cannot be felt inside the eye and does not require maintenance.
- CataractsCrystalens is the only FDA-approved intraocular lens that uses the natural focusing ability of the eye, and the only FDA-approved presbyopia correcting IOL for cataract patients that provides a single focal point throughout a continuous range of vision.
- Cataract SurgeryCataract surgery has a high degree of success. One and a half million people have this procedure every year in the United States and 95% have a successful result. As with any surgical procedure, complications can occur during or after surgery, and some are severe enough to limit vision. But in most cases, vision, as well as quality of life, improves.
- Eye ExamThe first step for treatment of floaters or flashes is a comprehensive eye exam, which often reveals the source of the issue. Floaters and flashes are sometimes a symptom of vitreous collapse, a serious condition.

- Diabetic RetinopathyProliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is a complication of diabetes caused by changes in the blood vessels of the eye. If you have diabetes, your body does not use and store sugar properly. High blood sugar levels create changes in the veins, arteries and capillaries that carry blood throughout the body. This includes the tine blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive nerve layer that lines the back of the eye.
- UltrasoundCataract microsurgery is performed by making a multi-plane (zig-zag) incision where the sclera meets the cornea, using ultrasound or laser energy to break up the old, cloudy lens, then removing it, and replacing it with a new intraocular lens (IOL). The incision can be made by a blade, but there are advantages to using new laser technology.

- BotoxDr. DiStefano is the Director and Founder of the DiStefano’s Skin Solutions Medical Spa. - Eyelid SurgeryTypically, there is an objective test that is done in an ophthalmologists’ office that confirms whether eyelid skin is responsible for blocking vision. The definitive test required by the insurance companies is the visual field exam – taped and untaped. You’ll look at some flashing lights and push a button when you see the light. Then you’ll repeat the test after having your eyelids taped up. The computer records how many you saw and how many you missed. The test involves evaluating each eye separately.
- BlepharoplastyBlepharoplasty is a procedure designed to enhance the most notable feature of your face – the eyes. This popular procedure can reduce the extra skin and puffiness of the upper eyelids. This surgery will produce a natural, rested, and more youthful appearance and can also improve visibility and vision.
