The Duke Endowment is a private foundation that serves the people of North Carolina and South Carolina by supporting selected programs of higher education, health care, children's welfare, and spiritual life. Established in 1924 by North Carolina industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke, the Endowment is a charitable trust that meets the definition of a private or independent foundation: a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization, established with funds provided by an individual, a family, or a corporation, to promote philanthropic purposes by making grants. The foundation makes grants to eligible institutions in North Carolina and South Carolina, initiates programs and efforts to meet identified needs, provides counsel and technical assistance to grantees, consults and advises on programs and projects, communicates through an annual report; a magazine, other printed materials, and via a Web site, operates a grantsmanship library as a resource for grant seekers and sponsors a summer internship program for college students from Davidson College and Duke, Furman, and Johnson C. Smith universities.
