He writes regularly for numerous medical journals and other publications, and is a guest reviewer for the international journals Aesthetic Surgery Journal and the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He was inspired to pursue a career in plastic surgery after a six-month trip as a volunteer in San Lucas Tolimin, Guatemala. Journeying by Jeep to the remote, guerrilla-occupied mountain regions, he worked around the clock, seven days a week, treating patients plagued with parasites, malnutrition, and tuberculosis. His most moving experiences came while living at the Casa Feliz orphanage, where he worked with the Cachchequal tribe of Central American Mayan Indians. Many of the orphans suffered from cleft lips or palates, and the life-changing difference a simple procedure made for them altered Dr. Gryskiewiczs life as well. He and his family are devoted to assisting the people of Third World countries. His heartwarming, electrifying adventures with the Cachchequal Mayan Indians, as well as other medical journeys, will be featured in his upcoming book, tentatively titled Three Faces. Dr. Gryskiewicz travels annually to South America with the international aid organizations Interplast and San Francisco de Asis to operate on children with cleft lips, cleft palates, and burns. This work is featured in the book, Caring Hands: Inspiring Stories of Volunteer Medical Missions by Susan I. Alexis, in the chapter - Correcting the Negative. For this and other volunteer work, he received the WCCO Radio Good Neighbor Award in 1986 and the University of St. Thomas Humanitarian of the Year Award in 1992. Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine has named him one of the areas Top Doctors and he has been quoted in Elle and Allure magazines. Dr. Gryskiewicz lives in Minneapolis with his wife and enjoys art, photography, composing music, and cross-country skiing. An avid runner and triathlon competitor, Dr. Gryskiewicz has completed the Twin Cities, Boston, New York, and Chicago marathons, as well as Minnesotas Liberty Triathlon, a half iron man competition.
