General Info
Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon Specializing in the Treatment of Hip, Knee, & Shoulder Injuries James R. Bowers, MD, has extensive experience in joint replacement of the hip, knee, and shoulder, performing more than 300 joint replacements each year. Dr. Bowers’ focus on customized, minimally invasive approaches – like anterior hip replacement and robotic-arm assisted surgery – allow his patients to benefit from low-trauma procedures and precision prosthesis fit for comfortable, long-lasting relief from joint pain. Dr. Bowers received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He then graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health with his MD in 1999. Dr. Bowers completed his orthopedic residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, in 2005, and a research fellowship, also at Duke. Dr. Bowers is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Following his residency training, Dr. Bowers practiced in Wisconsin until 2018, when he returned to the Durham area to join EmergeOrtho, a large physician-owned orthopedic practice with offices statewide. Dr. Bowers is a patient-focused, results-oriented orthopedic surgeon, complemented by experience in sports medicine, trauma surgery, and clinical research. He is a compassionate doctor, known for delivering outstanding surgical results and high patient satisfaction. Dr. Bowers’ focus on using the least invasive, most precise surgical methods possible were born of a personal understanding. Dr. Bowers is not just an orthopedic doctor – he’s been an orthopedic patient, too. He once broke his clavicle while training for an Ironman competition. After weighing his options, he elected surgery and was happy to find himself back to training within a week, successfully completing the Ironman that year.
