- OphthalmologyDr. Notaro Rietz has been a leader in retina care in Western New York. In addition to her state-of-the-art Amherst office where she has practiced since 1996, she was the first to bring retinal surgery to Niagara County when she opened a second office in Wheatfield in 2005. Her equipment is top of the line, and she has been first to bring several new technologies to the Buffalo area. She has also been on the teaching staff at the Buffalo Veterans Hospital, involved in the instruction of ophthalmology residents.
- Macular DegenerationMacular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina, the inside back layer of the eye that records the images we see and sends them via the optic nerve from the eye to the brain. The retina’s central portion, known as the macula, is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it controls our ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors, and see objects in fine detail.
- CataractsNote: Retina specialists do not prescribe glasses or perform cataract surgery or perform DMV vision examinations. These functions are provided by optometrists or general ophthalmologists, respectively. Retina specialists provide unique services and evaluations when serious conditions are known or suspected to involve the back of the eye.
