It manages a real estate portfolio containing more than 12,000 acres of land and over 45-million-square-foot office, industrial, retail and technical space to provide trade, transportation and economic development services. The authority also supports various development programs to foster regional economic growth with the assistance of local businesses and communities and support of waterfront and industrial projects that generate employment opportunities and business activities and promote regional ferry services. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has a port authority police that covers screening points, responds to aircraft incidents, aids travelers, and escorts and protects dignitaries. It operates emergency services, K-9 and motorcycle units. It is headquartered in New York City.
