- Medical Weight LossUpper arm tissue relaxes and descends with aging, gravity, and weight loss. The drooping of skin is caused by a stretching of the anchoring fascial system, loss of elastic recoil of the skin and loss of supporting fat. The extra sagging can result in significant "loose hammock" like deformity from the axilla to the elbow. This is also called a bat wing type of deformity.
- Primary Care52. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO PREPARE FOR THE SURGERY? All patients planning to have any kind of surgery need to be fully evaluated and cleared by a primary care physician. A few simple blood tests including a blood count, urinalysis and pregnancy test are absolutely necessary. Your surgeon may want additional tests depending on your needs.
- Constipation
- Electrocardiogram53. WHAT KIND OF TESTS DO I NEED BEFORE THE SURGERY? A CBC or complete blood count is necessary to make sure you are not anemic. This means your blood count is high enough so your surgery and recovery will be without any problems. The urinalysis is to make sure there is no infectious process going on inside of your body. There is a small chance that the implants could become seeded with the bacteria in the urine if there is a urinary tract infection. This would mean that the implants would have to be removed. Finally the pregnancy test is to make sure that we are only operating on one person. If you are pregnant the surgery should be cancelled until the pregnancy is terminated or well after the baby is born. Other tests some surgeons may require are blood chemistry, bleeding and coagulation/clotting times, an electrocardiogram of the heart, a chest x-ray and mammograms depending on your age.
- Pregnancy
- Urinary Tract Infection56. CAN I HAVE THE SUGERY IF I HAVE A URINARY TRACT INFECTION? NO. The bacteria in the bladder can seed the breast implant with bacteria and cause the implant to become infected. This will necessitate removal of the implants.
- Anxiety
- UltrasoundThere are several different types of liposuction procedures, such as tumescent or ultrasound liposuction, that have developed as a result of recent advancements in new technologies. Together the patient and the surgeon can discuss which method(s) are best during the initial consultation visit. Liposuction can last from thirty minutes to several hours depending upon the amount of fat to be removed. Liposuction surgery is an excellent procedure that can benefit those who want to remove unattractive fatty deposits.
- MRIDiagnosis and Treatment: The condition can be diagnosed with a history, physical examination and photographs. Sometimes additional testing such as MRI or other X-rays are necessary. The surgical treatment and timing for treatment of congenital breast problems varies. Consultation can be done during the patient's adolescence, however, treatment may have to wait until breast development is complete. Breast development is usually complete by the age of 16-18 years.
- X-Rays
- Mammography104. What do I do when I need a mammogram? Your schedule for mammograms should be unchanged with or without the implants. The recommendation id to start yearly mammograms at the age of forty. Women with family history of breast cancer should start at an earlier age. The presence of sub muscular implants does not make mammography or the visualization of the breasts any harder and does not change the ability of the radiologist to detect breast cancer or other changes within the breast.
- Chemotherapy62. Will I be nauseous and throw up after surgery? Nausea and vomiting after surgery is usually a direct result of how the anesthesia is administered, what kind of drugs are used for pain control and what kind of medications are used to prevent the nausea, vomiting after anesthesia. Diprivan/Propofol which is the most commonly use drug used to induce anesthesia today is actually a very powerful anti emetic and is very helpful in reducing the post operative nausea and vomiting. The dosage of narcotics used and the individual reaction to these narcotics are the most important factors determining your nausea and vomiting after surgery. Minimizing the amount of narcotics during the surgery will reduce the post op nausea and vomiting. The use of other medications is also helpful. Zofran also known as Ondansetron which is a powerful antiemetic initially used to treat nausea and vomiting in patients having chemotherapy is now also used for elective surgery and is usually administered intravenously. This drug is also available as pills and can be taken after the surgery if the nausea and vomiting persists. Some surgeons like to use scopolamine for post op nausea and vomiting. After surgery the earlier you stop the use of narcotics and start Motrin/Ibuprofen and Tylenol/Acetaminophen the less nausea and vomiting you will have.

- Ear SurgerySurgery of the ear, also known as otoplasty, is a procedure that helps reduce protrusion of the ear away from the head. Most often, ear surgery is performed on children between the ages of four to fourteen. Ears that “stick out†are often the source of teasing and ridicule in young children. This teasing can have a devastating effect on the child’s psyche.

- BotoxA temporary solution which exists, and is currently used, is with Botox and the other paralytic agents that are also commonly used to temporarily erase wrinkles. These agents paralyze the pumps of the sweat glands and the sweat can no longer be moved to the surface of the skin from the deeper layer of the skin where it is produced. These agents are expensive and their effects last for a short period of time, 3-5 months in the best of circumstances.
- Eyelid SurgeryThe surgery generally takes about one to three hours and is performed in the physician’s office. If additional cosmetic procedures are being performed, the eyelid surgery could last longer.
- LiposuctionLiposuction (or lipoplasty) is a body-sculpting procedure to remove fat that is unresponsive to dieting and exercising. This procedure can be applied to nearly any area of the body and is commonly used on multiple areas during an operation. Liposuction results in a slimmer and better proportioned figure. Liposuction is used effectively to reduce love handles, saddlebags, a double-chin, a bulge around the waistline, or other unsightly fatty deposits in order to develop a better shape and create a more beautiful body.
- Breast AugmentationRevision surgery for breast implants is common. A frequent question all patients ask prior to having breast augmentation is how long my surgery will last. Unfortunately there is no clear cut answer. Revision surgery can happen for various reasons. There are patients that have the same set of implants their whole lives and they are comfortable with them. Others may not be happy with the way their bodies are aging and wish to have them revised. And a small subgroup may develop problems with their implants with aging and the progression of time.
- Breast ReductionBreast reduction also called reduction mammaplasty is a procedure that reduces the size and reshapes the breasts in order to make them smaller. Breast Reduction is performed by removing excess glandular breast tissue and skin. Large breasts can cause physical pain as well as emotional and social anxiety.
- Breast LiftA breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. As a woman ages, skin loses some elasticity which can cause the breasts to lose their natural shape and firmness. Pregnancy, weight gain and loss can also cause the breast to enlarge, stretching the skin and causing the breasts to drop. This mastopexy procedure is designed to elevate the breasts and give them a more youthful appearance. A breast lift or mastopexy may also be completed in conjunction with breast enlargement surgery (augmentation).
- RhinoplastyNote: If rhinoplasty is being utilized to correct a breathing problem or nose deformity, the procedure may be covered under the patient’s insurance policy.
- Breast ReconstructionBreast cancer can be devastating. Breast reconstruction can be psychologically helpful to deal with this loss. Breast reconstruction can be performed with your own tissues as flaps or with implants and tissue expanders. Recent advances in reconstructive techniques with fat grafting have also opened a whole host of other options to the patient seeking breast reconstruction. Dr. Day works with the patient to create a breast that most closely approximates the form, feel, and appearance of a normal breast, although the original breast will never be reproduced. The use of breast implants that are now available in various shapes forms, and projections gives us a variety of options to consider. For patients that are not having immediate reconstruction or who have lack of native breast skin, two stage procedures with tissue expansion is a good technique. Finally the transplantation of the patient's own tissue either by pedicled flaps or by the free flap technique are excellent options available for reconstruction.

- Thigh LiftA thigh lift predominantly reduces loose skin around the thigh with emphasis on tightening the inner thigh. Occasionally the incision is extended to also lift the posterior buttock area. Newer techniques concentrate on tightening the deep tissues, which gives a nicer result and reduces downward migration of the inner thigh incision.
- Face LiftA Facelift (Rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure designed to smooth and firm the skin, providing a fresh, youthful appearance. Throughout one’s life, the sun’s radiation, stress, gravity, and other factors cause the skin to sag and fit more loosely. Areas of the face and neck, in particular around the jaw line, are especially prone to the aging process. Though these changes are gradual, wrinkles and other signs of aging can make individuals “feel older†than they really are.
- Neck LiftPurpose: The purpose of the Neck Lift is to improve the contour of the neck and create a more attractive angular neckline. This is accomplished by removing the fatty accumulation under the neck skin and tightening the deeper muscle layer. The neck lift is a tightening procedure that is usually if not always done in conjunction with a Facelift. The neck is contoured, the muscles are tightened and any excess skin is removed through hidden hairline incisions. Liposuction can also be used.
- BlepharoplastyEyelid surgery (known as blepharoplasty) is a corrective procedure that can reduce dark circles or “bags†under the eyes, remove excess wrinkles, and provide a more youthful appearance to the eyes. One of the first things noticed about a person is their eyes. During the aging process, wrinkles, lines, and puffiness contribute to a tired or aged appearance. The blepharoplasty surgery is often performed in conjunction with other facial procedures such as a face lift or rhinoplasty (nose surgery).
- AbdominoplastySometimes simply dieting and exercising are not enough to take care of waistline problems. In such cases, a patient may wish to consider a tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty). A tummy tuck is the surgical removal of excess skin or fatty deposits from the abdomen, along with the repositioning of abdomen muscles into a tighter formation. This bodily enhancement procedure is designed for those who wish to have a flatter and tighter stomach. It is also helpful in remedying the vertical separation of abdomen muscles known as diastasis, which can occur following pregnancy.
- Nose SurgeryTo begin the surgery, tiny incisions are made which allow the surgeon to access the underlying nasal structure. Once the skin is opened, the cartilage and bone are reshaped to form the basis for the new look. Two basic methods are utilized for performing nose surgery. These methods are referred to as the ‘open’ and the ‘closed’ techniques. The open technique allows for maximum visibility and control over the procedure. The incision used in the open technique is placed in-between the nostrils on the columella (the medial nostril strip). In the closed technique, the incisions are internal and heal faster; however, there is less surgical control over the outcome. The physician can discuss which technique is best when the patient arrives for the initial consultation visit.
- Body LiftThe precise procedure varies with each patient, depending on the body type and desired surgical outcome. Generally speaking, the body lift procedure entails making an incision that follows the upper and/or inner thigh, to the waistline. In more extensive surgeries, the incision goes completely around the waist and lower back. Adjustments to the buttocks and thighs require an incision at the crease of the buttocks. Excess skin is then removed, followed by the underlying fat deposits. Finally, the skin is pulled taught and sutured into the new configuration. The entire procedure can last from 3 to 7 hours. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
- Breast Surgery128. What if I need breast surgery? Are the implants guaranteed? Most non plastic surgeons who are operating on breasts will have a plastic surgeon also available for implant exchange at the same time
- OtoplastyOtoplasty is not limited to children and may also be performed on older patients. Cosmetic procedures are available for those individuals with large ears and for those with congenital (birth) irregularities that detract from their appearance. Additionally, an individual’s ears may exhibit abnormal traits due to their genetic make-up or an accidental injury, such as losing an ear or part of an ear. Otoplasty is used successfully for each of these situations. Regardless of the procedure, patients have been pleased with the long-lasting improvements to their appearance offered by ear surgery.
- Scar RevisionScar Revision: The techniques used and the extent of the procedure are determined for each patient during her consultation and examination. This will vary with individual needs.
- Lip AugmentationWhat to Expect After Treatment: Immediately after the treatment, you may experience slight redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising and an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. With lip augmentation, the swelling may last longer. Some patients experience swelling for about a week. During this time, the lips can look somewhat uneven. This means that the result directly after the treatment should not be regarded as the final result.

Chemical peels have been performed for centuries. With morethan 1.3 million patients having chemical peels, this procedure was the most commonly performed non-surgical cosmetic procedure in 2001 for both men and women.
