Dr. Joseph Vazzana spent a year teaching advanced high school physics before going to medical school to pursue surgery and basic research on immunity responses in cancer.After graduating from medical school at SUNY Downstate Medical College and completing a general surgery residency at University of Buffalo, Dr. Vazzana embarked on a two-year research fellowship at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. There, he was the lead investigator in a two-year project studying a class of drug's ability to effectively trigger an immune response against tumors. He was also a co-investigator on two other projects that looked at ways to support the body's ability to use its natural immune system to fight cancer. He has presented this research several times, including at the American Surgical Congress, the Federation of Experimental Biology, and at the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting.Dr. Vazzana joins our general surgery practice with a specialization in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery.
