As an AmeriCorps volunteer, Dr. McHugh worked with high school aged youth to engage them in volunteerism and help them learn about pressing social issues affecting their communities. During that year he applied to medical school. Dr. McHugh ultimately chose to attend Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, where early in his education he was exposed to the fields of Medical Oncology and Hematology. Drawn by the opportunity to leverage the latest breakthroughs to help good people deal with often challenging situations, he knew after completing his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Rochester that he wanted to proceed on to subspecialty training in these fields.
