- Medical Weight LossAbdominal surgery encompasses any type of surgical procedure involving one or more of the organs located in the abdomen. Surgeries can be performed for weight loss (reducing the entryway into the stomach or making the stomach smaller), repairing hernias, eliminating acid reflux, removing gallbladder or gallstones, extracting benign and cancerous tumors, correcting bowel disorders and bypassing blocked arteries. Gerig surgeons frequently use laparoscopic techniques involving one or several small incisions to promote quicker recovery, shorter hospital stay, less scarring and reduced pain.

- ColonoscopyA lower endoscopy examines the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Doctors can carefully inspect the rectum, colon, and sigmoid colon in combination with a colonoscopy and a sigmoidoscopy to evaluate changes in bowel habits, identify inflammation, polyps or growths, remove polyps, collect biopsy samples, or diagnose cancer.
- EndoscopyAn endoscopy is a procedure that involves the use of a tiny camera on the end of a long, flexible tube that is carefully inserted into the body. The tiny camera transmits images to a video monitor, which the doctor watches to guide the flexible tube and search for abnormalities. This procedure enables doctors to investigate and determine the root cause of symptoms, diagnose through the collection of tissue samples (biopsy) to test for diseases and conditions and, sometimes, treat problems by passing special tools through the endoscope.

- RadiologyTesting will not be performed by a facility without a physician’s order. You must take your physician’s order with you to the testing site. Please be aware there is a 72 hour turnaround time for non-urgent calls requesting duplicate copies of original orders from our office. Radiology and Pathology results are generally available within 3-5 working days. You will be able to view your results thru our Patient Portal. You will automatically be called with your results. If you have not received a call from our office within 5-7 working days from the date of your test or procedure, please call and ask for the clinical staff.
- ChemotherapyCancer surgery is used to diagnose and determine if a growth is benign or malignant, evaluate the size of a tumor, assess whether or not the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, gauge the cancer’s stage, remove the cancerous tumor as primary treatment, debulk (remove as much of the cancer as possible) in order to make chemotherapy or radiation more effective, and improve quality of life by relieving symptoms or side effects. Traditionally, cancer surgery involves removing the cancer along with nearby healthy tissue to ensure that all is removed. In some cases surgeons will remove some lymph nodes to determine if the cancer has spread. Gerig surgeons are experts in cancers of the thyroid, parathyroid, breast, lung, esophagus, stomach, intestine, colon, rectum, skin and lymph node.
- General SurgeryDr. Thomas Etter specializes in general surgery and wound care with extensive training in minimally invasive, robotic-assisted laparoscopic procedures. He is committed to helping patients make deliberate, fair and well-informed decisions autonomously.

- Minimally Invasive SurgerySurgeons have been successfully using minimally invasive surgery since the late 1980s. In minimally invasive surgery doctors make one or several small incisions (each about the size of a dime), as opposed to traditional “open” surgery that involves a large incision. Then, doctors insert tubes through each of the small incisions. A tiny camera (usually a laparoscope or endoscope) is passed through a tube, allowing the surgical team to view magnified images on video monitors. Specialized instruments pass through the other small incisions to perform the actual procedure.
- Vascular SurgeryVascular surgery treats diseases involving the arteries and veins. Some diseases occur only in arteries, such as blood clots and arteriosclerosis, some occur only in the veins, while others affect both arteries and veins. Vascular diseases become more common as people age, with many people not even realizing they suffer from these diseases in their early stages. Other factors, besides age, that increase the chances of vascular disease include family history, illness or injury, pregnancy, prolonged periods of inactivity, lack of exercise, smoking, obesity, hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. Vascular procedures performed by Gerig surgeons include abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral vascular disease, and carotid arteries.

- LaparoscopyNathaniel Dew is a board-certified surgeon specializing in minimally invasive surgery of the chest, abdomen, pelvis and endocrine system. He also has a special emphasis on vascular disease such as carotid surgery for stroke prevention and improving blood flow in diabetics with non-healing wounds. He utilizes the latest medical technologies, such as endovascular and laparoscopy, to improve outcomes and reduce recovery times for his patients.
- Laparoscopic SurgeryDuring his years as a general surgeon, Dr. Gerig was always interested in the science of surgery. He was constantly learning and searching for better and newer techniques that could serve his patients. Even late in his career, a time when many others would have rested on past accomplishments, Dr. Gerig went to courses to learn laparoscopic surgery. This effort for continual improvement became one of the hallmarks of Gerig Surgical Associates.
- Bariatric SurgeryDr. Winston Gerig is a board-certified surgeon who has received advanced training in general, laparoscopic and bariatric surgery, allowing him to perform a wide range of surgical procedures. His special interests include advanced laparoscopic surgery of the foregut (esophagus and stomach) resulting in specialties involving laparoscopic acid reflux surgery and laparoscopic bariatric surgery (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve and revisional surgeries).
