Established in 1987, Red River Valley & Western Railroad is North Dakota's regional railroad. Based in Breckenridge, Minn., the company owns and operates 517 route miles of track and handles an average of about 42,000 carloads annually. It also offers property on lease and industrial development consulting. Red River Valley & Western Railroad has moved more than 485,000 carloads of grain, sugar, corn syrup, fertilizer, petroleum products, coal, gravel, farm machinery, feed products, steel and other materials. The company has received Regional Railroad of the Year award by the Railway Age.
