- Eye ExamOur ophthalmologist will provide you with a comprehensive examination of your eyes to include a thorough external and internal evaluation. Allow one and a half hours for your exam including 20-40 minutes for your eyes to fully dilate. Dilation may cause blurring of your near vision and an increased sensitivity to light for up to 6 hours. We will provide disposable dark sunglasses for you and it may be advisable for you to bring someone to drive you home. A refraction is commonly performed to determine the need for eyeglasses during a comprehensive eye exam. There is a separate charge for this service which is payable on the day of your exam. Because Medicare and most other insurance companies consider a refraction medically unnecessary, they do not reimburse for this service.
