Dr Frye explained what was going on, he assured me I would be ok, Dr Frye impressed my husband with his knowledge and bed side matter, and that’s hard to do with husband.. after I came out surgery’ he explained what he fixed, he took his time to make sure my husband understood everything.... When I was at myself my husband said we have found a good Doctor and surgeon.... I’m 54 of age an I have some medical issues, but I know I have wonderful caring doctors at Grandview Hospital..... Thank you so much Dr Frye and advanced surgeons and grandview hospital S Cole 03/10/2023

- Urinary IncontinenceThe benefits of weight loss surgery far outweigh the risks. Studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine have compared patients with a BMI over 35 who have had surgery vs those who have not. The surgery group’s risk of early death decreased by 30-40%. Surgery has tremendous benefits in decreasing severity or even putting into remission diseases like Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Sleep Apnea, Arthritic Pain, GERD, and Urinary Incontinence. It has also been shown to decrease the risk of developing certain cancers such as Ovarian, Breast, Uterine, and Colon Cancer. Additionally, in our practice, we have seen patients’ nutritional status improve after bariatric surgery.

- Colon CancerCommon conditions of the colon that bring people in for medical care include cancer. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year, with more than 100,000 new cases expected in 2019.1 Other potentially serious conditions affecting the colon include inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis (small pouches that become inflamed or infected), and bowel blockages.
- EndoscopyGERD is typically diagnosed in the clinic with patient history and physical exam. However, other studies such as endoscopy or a pH probe study may be necessary in some cases.
- Depression
- Mental HealthThis program is a structured 12 weeks program to enable patients having had bariatric surgery to regain the use of their tool. - HypothyroidismThe thyroid gland is located at the base of the neck, in front of the trachea; and it has a variety of functions. The primary function of the thyroid gland is to control the basal metabolic rate. In essence, the thyroid gland functions as the metabolic thermostat. The thyroid gland produces two hormones, T3 and t4 that influence a number of body functions. Increased levels of thyroid hormones can result in chest palpitations, increased heart rate, heat intolerance, weight loss, anxiety, sleeplessness, and diarrhea. Thyroid function is monitored and regulated by the pituitary gland which produces thyroid-stimulating hormones or TSH. As thyroid function diminishes, the pituitary gland increases the production of TSH to stimulate thyroid gland activity. Conversely, when the thyroid is overactive, the pituitary decreases the production of TSH in an attempt to minimize thyroid stimulation. Underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism is a very common disease associated with the thyroid gland. Most commonly, this is caused by a Hashimoto’s thyroiditis which is a disease that results in the patient’s own immune system attacking the thyroid gland. The patient may go through a period of overactive thyroid, but the ultimate result will be hypothyroidism, requiring thyroid hormone replacement. Overactive thyroid or hyperthyroidism is a derangement of thyroid function that results in access to thyroid hormone production. In the United States, the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in young to middle-aged the emails is Graves’ disease. Other common causes of hyperthyroidism include toxic multi-modular goiter or a solitary toxic nodule. Unlike hyperthyroidism, many hyperthyroid patients will eventually require surgical consultation. Graves’ disease is commonly treated by radioactive iodine (RAI), but there are a number of contraindications to RAI therapy in Graves’ disease. Radioactive iodine is not as widely accepted in the treatment of toxic multinodular goiter or solitary toxic nodules.

- Thyroid CancerThyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy in the United States. Over the past 30 years, the incidence of thyroid cancer has more than doubled. Thyroid cancer is generally one of the last crescent forms of cancer, in most can be cured when properly diagnosed and treated. 97 to 99% of all thyroid cancers are classified as well-differentiated which tend to have a very good long-term prognosis with greater than 80% survival over 20 years. Papillary carcinoma is the most common form of well-differentiated thyroid cancer with other types including follicular carcinoma and Hurthle cell carcinoma. Thyroid cancer is treated with the removal of the entire thyroid gland and adjacent lymph nodes followed by thyroid hormone replacement and radioactive iodine. Other forms of thyroid cancer include medullary carcinoma and anaplastic thyroid cancer which are classified as poorly differentiated tumors and tend to have a more aggressive course.
- UltrasoundFine Needle Aspiration (FNA): Involves putting a needle into the mass or lump by palpitation (feeling) or ultrasound guidance in the surgeon’s office.
- MRIA breast mass may be felt while performing a self-breast exam or by a radiologic test, such as a mammogram, an ultrasound, or even an MRI. Thankfully, almost 80% of breast masses (or lumps) are not cancerous. Nevertheless, careful evaluation is needed since almost 1 in 6 American women who live into their late 70s (normal life expectancy of about 78) will develop breast cancer at some point in their life
- RadiologyThis study is done in the radiology department and consists of drinking barium while watching under x-ray guidance. The barium will outline the esophagus and stomach and demonstrate if a hiatal hernia is present and if reflux is occurring. This study is not done routinely. It is usually done if a large hiatal hernia is suspected and also if a patient has had prior surgery on the esophagus.

- ChemotherapyThis is a group of chemicals given to kill rapidly dividing cells. Whereas, surgery and radiation are used to control cancer cells in the breast and lymph nodes, chemotherapy reaches vulnerable areas that can’t be reached by surgery or radiation (bone, brain, lungs, liver, etc.). Determinants of who should get chemotherapy include patient age, tumor size, lymph node status, hormonal status, and the biological aggressiveness of the cancer. Depending on the hormonal status of the cancer, anti-estrogen hormonal therapy may be used.
- Radiation TherapyIf you have been diagnosed with rectal cancer your doctor may recommend chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery to remove the rectum and nearby lymph nodes, or a combination of these options depending on the type of cancer and how far it has advanced.

- Minimally Invasive SurgeryThe da Vinci® surgical system gives your surgeon an advanced set of instruments to use in performing robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. The term “robotic” often misleads people. Robots don’t perform surgery. Your surgeon performs surgery with da Vinci by using instruments that he or she guides via a console.
- Robotic SurgeryPerformed at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, the surgeons at Advanced Surgeons specialize in general surgery and provide exceptional surgical expertise. Whenever possible, our surgeons employ advanced techniques such as minimally-invasive laparoscopic surgery or robotic surgery that can enable a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery to your normal lifestyle. We offer comprehensive medical and surgical care to the needs of both men and women.

- Breast ReconstructionThis is the removal of the entire breast. Candidates for this include patients not suitable for breast conservation (lumpectomy/ wide local excision). Despite equivalent survival for Stage I and II disease, there has been a trend for more patients to choose this option. If this option is chosen, breast reconstruction should be a standard component of this therapy. Reconstruction performed by the plastic surgeon may involve the patient’s own tissue (autologous), synthetic implants, or both. The reconstruction may be done at the time of the mastectomy or delayed.
- Breast SurgeryThe board-certified breast surgeons with Advanced Surgeons, P.C. specialize in breast surgery to treat breast cancer. If you’re seeking breast surgery in the Birmingham area, give our office a call at (205) 595-8985.
- Laparoscopic SurgeryDoctors perform minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgeries through a few small incisions or a single small incision near the belly button.
