Birmingham Regional Emergency Medical Services System, also known as BREMSS, provides framework for the development, coordination and improvement of pre-hospital emergency medical care systems. It serves the residents of Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, Shelby, Walker and Winston counties in north-central Alabama. The agency administers the Mass Casualty Incident program, which handles mass casualty incidents. Birmingham Regional Emergency Medical Services System works with more than 180 Emergency Medical Service organizations, over 15 hospitals, nearly 10 trauma centers, and approximately 80 municipalities. The agency operates a regional trauma, stroke, divert, and terrorism monitoring system. It maintains a fleet of wooden boards, straps and pillows.
