- CryotherapyLocalized swelling and redness are not a cause for concern. That is not uncommon immediately following cryotherapy. We can discuss ways to ease swelling and discoloration; for instance, applying a topical steroidal medication can aid in improving inflammation and tenderness. You may also experience some blistering. Take care not to disturb the treatment site. Scabbing is a good sign that the blister is healing! Just keep the area clean as you would a cut or sore to prevent a secondary infection, and we may recommend a dressing or something to protect the site should your clothes rub up against it. Once the area has healed, our patients are thrilled. Often, the site looks unblemished – as if the original lesion, AK, SK, or wart never existed.
- Medical Weight LossAthletic individuals who are already on an exercise program and of normal body weight are considered ideal for this treatment. However anyone with an accumulation of fat that they can pinch can be a candidate. Usually, they have done just about everything possible to lose the unwanted, localized fat accumulation. In general, the most important thing is that they have realistic expectations of what they can achieve. Age, by itself, is not a significant factor. Many patients who are in their 60’s and even 70’s have had the procedure done and have been delighted with the outcome. The patient should be in good general health without significant heart or lung problems. This technique is not a substitute for weight loss. There is a limit to how much fat that can be removed safely at one time.
- Pediatric Care“It was my dad’s business in Tuscumbia that brought me to the University of Alabama, where I attended medical school and graduated in 1974. I always wanted to care for children and I did my internship at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. I soon discovered that taking care of sick children was not my true calling. While I love taking care of kids, seeing children suffer from conditions like Leukemia and Cystic Fibrosis was too traumatic for me personally. I was fortunate that I was able to enter a residency in dermatology at UAB after I completed my pediatric internship, but I still had my love for pediatrics. So, in the mid-1980s, I began my practice of cosmetic surgery.“
- Labor and DeliverySometimes physical stresses like high fever, surgery, childbirth, and some medications can cause hair loss. Due to this, it is important to list all drugs and illnesses that have occurred within 6 months of the onset of hair loss. Extreme weight loss can also precipitate the hair loss. This may be due to a lack of protein so a healthy diet is important to your recovery. Birth control pills can also cause hair loss as can stopping birth control pills. This type of hair loss generally lasts 3-6 months.

- UltrasoundVASER® Shape is two clinically-proven effective and safe technologies in one. It combines both therapeutic ultrasound technology and zonal lymphatic massage. Ultrasound is delivered via a specialized applicator. Treatment is non-invasive and well-tolerated. Many of our patients describe the treatment as similar to a relaxing hot stone massage or how they feel following a good workout. Ultrasound delivered in a controlled manner and at the appropriate depth as determined by our dermatologist, Dr. Barry Ginsburg, precisely warms the treatment areas and alters the underlying fatty tissue layer.
- Mohs SurgeryCertain cells or melanocytes give our skin, eyes, and hair pigment or color. Sometimes, those cells in our skin can cluster together due to unprotected exposure to dangerous UVA-UVB light from the sun’s rays or artificial sources such as tanning beds. Our dermatologist applies his considerable experience and expertise to evaluate your skin and determine if the spots are just that, brown discoloration that requires cosmetic treatment, or if they are cancers that require prompt treatment such as precision Mohs surgery. Cancerous areas differ from harmless spots as they fail to heal and maybe painful, itch, or bleed.
- BotoxDysport is an alternative to Botox. An injection prescribed for for temporary improvement in the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults less than 65 years of age.
- LiposuctionHe began his aesthetics when he was the first doctor in Birmingham to treat spider veins and inject Collagen. When liposuction became an outpatient procedure thanks to the work of Jeffry Klein he traveled to California to learn his technique and soon became the leading physician in Birmingham to perform tumescent liposuction and then SmartLipo.
- Breast AugmentationI now perform a wide variety of cosmetic procedures at Ginsburg Dermatology including chemical peels, fractional laser resurfacing, injectable fillers such as Restylane and the use to botulinum toxin in the form of Dysport and Botox. I also do fat injections for butt and breast augmentation. In the medical spa we also have laser hair removal, vascular lasers and a variety of lasers for skin tightening and peeling.
- Plastic SurgeryImagine reducing fat in the midsection without plastic surgery. The future is now, and thanks to advanced solutions and devices available on the market today, dermatologists such as Dr. Barry Ginsburg of Birmingham, Alabama, can make non-invasive, non-surgical fat reduction a reality. With the CoolSculpting system, patients can enjoy body contouring and targeted fat reduction without ever going under the surgeon’s scalpel.
- Face LiftAbsolutely! Dr. Barry Ginsburg may suggest combining cosmetic injectables to achieve the best results. Many issues can be treated with various injections, allowing patients to achieve a “liquid facelift.”
- Body ContouringCoolSculpting is a unique non-invasive body contouring treatment that uses cooling technology to freeze and destroy fat cells. The CoolSculpting device is applied directly to the treatment area, where it delivers controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate the fat cells. Once the fat cells are destroyed with cryolipolysis, they are eliminated from the body through the natural process of metabolism.
- Laser ResurfacingOne step further is laser resurfacing. With this amazing technology, we can target precisely how deep we go. The superficial laser peels have no down time. The deep laser peels for wrinkle removal can also have up to a week of down time. The new Halo laser combines a superficial and a deep component so we can get more improvement with much less down time. The choice of resurfacing treatment will also depend on your goals and your willingness to have more down time.
- GynecomastiaThe most common areas treated are the upper outer thighs known as “saddle bags” or “riding breeches”, the tummy, followed by the flanks and love handles in men. Other areas that are also treated are facial accumulations of fat, double chins, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, and ankles. For men, this procedure can be used to correct gynecomastia (enlarged breasts).
- Moles
- Cosmetic SurgeryContrary to sensationalistic misrepresentation in the lay press, liposuction surgery has been shown to be a very safe procedure with very few complications. A 1984 review article of over 5,000 cases of liposuction surgery published in the Journal of Cosmetic Surgery revealed no serious complication and a very low percentage of minor problems (i.e. temporary swelling, irregularity, numbness, etc.). As of January 1989, there haven’t been a single significant complication reported anywhere in the world from liposuction done with local anesthetic.
- DermabrasionSkin resurfacing is a general term for improving the appearance of the surface of the skin. In years past, chemical peels or dermabrasion have been the way to do do this. Now with improvements in technology, we can be much more precise in how we address these issues. For the most superficial sanding, we now use microdermabrasion. This addresses only the most superficial layer of the skin – more of a gentle buffing. For improvement in redness and brown spots we use BBL (broad band light/Intense pulse light), which also can reverse skin aging.
- Cosmetic DermatologyDr. Ginsburg and his team are leaders in cosmetic dermatology in Birmingham, AL and perform a variety of different procedures according to what’s right for each patient.
- Skin CancerThe Skin Cancer Foundation estimates there are 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are found in over 2 million people every year, making it the most common form of cancer in the US. It’s important to know what skin cancer is, and how to prevent/treat/understand it.

- Acne TreatmentSo, what I’m going to do today is talk about how to improve the surface texture, color, and tone of the skin. Of course, there are products that we use, you know, the main anti-aging product that everybody uses these days is retinoic acid, which comes in many different forms. Retin-A was the first brand, was used as an acne treatment, but we later discovered that it improved little brown spots and made the skin smooth looking. Beyond Retin-A, there are many treatments that we perform in order to make the skin look younger, and we can divide those treatments into two categories: Ablative, which means to burn and remove, and non-ablative, which produces no recovery and no change in the actual surface of the skin immediately after the treatments.
- EczemaChildren aged ten or younger, especially those who are prone to very dry skin or eczema (which makes the skin more susceptible to viral infections)
- LesionsActinic Keratoses take on a lot of different symptoms and characteristics. Notably, they tend to look like skin cancers. And indeed, they can turn into skin cancers without appropriate and prompt treatment. These are “precancerous” lesions. Additionally, AKs may resemble otherwise harmless, benign spots – such as “age spots” or brown hyperpigmentation and moles. These features underscore the need for Dr. Ginsburg to evaluate your skin and accurately diagnose these spots. Precise diagnostics inform effective treatment methods.
- Chemical PeelsA facial designed to rejuvenate your face. This treatment includes cleansing, exfoliation, neck, shoulder and facial massage as well as a light chemical peel and a custom facial mask.
- Rashes
- Skin CareNo special skin care is required after these treatments, but patients should be mindful of spending any time outside in the sun. Avoiding sunlight for the next few days and using a high SPF sunblock will protect the skin while it’s vulnerable following these services.
- MicrodermabrasionMicrodermabrasion – Like buffing the skin, a gentle sandblasting will smooth lines, lighten age spots, and treat other signs of skin damage.
- PsoriasisMany people say their psoriasis began after a stressful event, a sore throat, or some medications like lithium or antimalarials. Psoriasis can worsen when you injure the skin such as a cut, burn or bite or if your skin is exposed to constant friction from work or clothing. Moderate alcohol consumption can also worsen psoriasis.
- Sports MedicinePRP was first developed in the 1970s and first used in Italy in 1987 in an open heart surgery procedure. PRP therapy began gaining popularity in the mid-1990s. Since, many different medical fields such as cosmetic surgery, dentistry, sports medicine, and pain management have been using it.
- AllergiesThe ideal tissue implant for soft tissue augmentation should be safe, effective, durable, and easy to use. Cosmetic uses include treatment of scars, wrinkles, expression lines, and lip enlargement. Bioform Incorporated has developed, tested, and proven such a product. “ Radiessee “, already approved by the FDA for vocal cord implantation, is the first augmentation treatment in which no human or animal tissue is used, assuring that no disease can be transmitted. Because the implant is so compatible with human tissue, no skin testing is needed. The main cosmetic uses of Radiesse is the treatment of expression lines such as nasolabial fold, marionette lines, and frown. Depressed scars from trauma, surgery, or acne can be filled resulting in a natural, Undetectable implant that will last years. No allergy testing is required before use
