The National Institutes of Health, also known as NIH, is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. It includes more than 25 institutes and centers and provides leadership and financial support to researchers throughout the world. A part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the agency employs more than 18,000 employees. The National Institutes of Health includes the National Cancer Institute, National Eye Institute, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities and National Center for Research Resources. It also provides information on its programs and activities to public, scientific community, medical profession and the media.
