  Sinusitis is inflammation and infections of the sinuses – the small, air-filled pockets in the nose and forehead that produce mucus. Symptoms of sinusitis include a runny nose, reduced sense of smell, pain or tenderness around the sinus area, nasal drainage and headaches.   An in-lab sleep test is an overnight exam that allows doctors to monitor you as you sleep to diagnose sleep apnea or other sleep disorders. Although you can sleep in your own pajamas, sensors and electrodes will be placed on your head and body to monitor your physical activity during sleep. There will not be other patients in the room.

  Hoarseness is a symptom, not a disease in itself. It can be defined as any deviation from the voice’s normal quality such as raspiness, breathiness or strain. It is commonly caused by dry throat, dehydration, acid reflux, smoking, strain from excessive screaming or singing, allergies and coughs or colds. It can also, along with other side effects, suggest polyps on the vocal cords, throat or lung cancer, or thyroid conditions.

  In adults, there are many causes for swallowing disorders. • Hypothyroidism
  The most common thyroid disease is hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is defined as an overproduction of thyroid hormones, and there are several ways it can present: Graves’ disease, which is the production of too much thyroid hormone; toxic adenomas, or small nodules that develop in the thyroid gland that also produce hormones, disrupting the body’s chemical balance; subacute thyroiditis, which is inflammation of the thyroid that causes the gland to “leak” excess hormones, lasting a few weeks to a few months and hyperthyroidism developed from pituitary gland malfunctions or cancerous growths. Hypothyroidism, by contrast, is the underproduction of thyroid hormones. It is caused by certain drugs, autoimmune disorders and removal of the thyroid.

  Some masses can be benign, such as lipomas, hemangiomas, neuromas and fibromas. Others, such as thyroid cancer, mucosal cancer and metastatic disease are all examples of malignant masses; these are very serious and require immediate treatment.

  An ultrasound-guided biopsy uses soundwave imaging to guide a needle into the thyroid tumors or other tumors of the head or neck and remove a small tissue sample. This procedure is generally much safer and less invasive than a surgical biopsy.
• MRI
  A diagnosis is usually made through visual inspection with an otoscope or nasal endoscopy. An imaging test, either a CT scan or MRI, can be useful in determining the size of the polyp and in ruling out more serious growths, such as tumors. Allergy tests may be administered in order to identify the substance responsible for your symptoms.

  Dr. Manning is a triple-boarded certified surgeon who returned to Northwest Arkansas from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. While at Mayo Clinic, he completed an internship in General Surgery, a residency in Otorhinolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery, and went on to become a Chief Resident Associate and instructor of Otolaryngology. He enjoys and practices all areas of pediatric and adult ear, nose, and throat surgery and has special interests in the areas of thyroid and parathyroid surgery, sinus surgery, sleep medicine, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Manning has strong ties to Northwest Arkansas. He graduated from Bentonville High School and the University of Arkansas. Before going on to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences to pursue a career in medicine, he worked for several local businesses including Tyson Foods. Dr. Manning and his family are happy to once again be part of the Northwest Arkansas community.

• Brow Lift
  Dr. Spencer and Dr. Manning employ several different techniques for brow lifting surgery. One of those techniques is the endoscopic brow lift. The endoscopic technique involves making three to five small incisions behind the hairline through which endoscopic and surgical equipment is passed. The surgery is performed while watching the instruments on a monitor. Another technique employed by Dr. Spencer and Dr. Manning involves creating a small incision along existing forehead creases, elevating the eyebrow and removing excess forehead tissue. This incision is closed meticulously, resulting in an imperceptible scar that looks better than the preexisting forehead crease. This mid-forehead buttonhole lift has a much lower chance of complications, such as forehead numbness, fluid collections and unpredictable or short-lived results, than other methods of eyebrow elevation.
• Liposuction
  Liposuction is the most effective treatment available for the removal of localized fatty deposits that don’t respond to changes in diet and exercise. The procedure involves one or a series of small incisions through which a hollow, cylindrical device called a cannula is used. The cannula suctions out fatty tissue, re-contouring the affected area. Liposuction can be used on virtually any part of the body, and scarring is generally minimal.
