Really, you had him write emails for you. That sounds like the free initial meeting ended, and work began. You must be new to hiring professionals. They charge for all work (phone call, email, meetings, etc...). An itemized bill is not a requirement.
You should never ask someone to do work on your behalf (email, phone call, etc...) unless you are ready to pay and understand what the fees are.

After what I thought was an introductory interview which they claimed was free, they charged me $125!!! All they did was write a few e-mails. They never discussed fees before hand and didn't itemize anything. Be very careful with Clifton larson Allen!!!!
