General Info

Georgios Klironomos, MD, MSCI, PhD, is a neurosurgeon at South Shore University Hospital (formerly Southside Hospital), specializing in the surgical treatment of brain tumors; skull base pathologies; pituitary lesions; and cerebrovascular disease, such as brain aneurysms, carotid stenosis, arteriovenous malformations and pathologies requiring cerebral revascularization procedures (bypasses). He also treats degenerative spine disorders, hydrocephalus Chiari malformations and traumatic pathologies. His dual training in procedures for cerebrovascular disorders as well as open and endoscopic approaches to skull base conditions gives him the ability to comprehensively diagnose the complicated pathologies of the brain and its vasculature and to select the most effective, least invasive treatment approach for each patient s needs and circumstances.Dr. Klironomos leads both clinical and basic research into pathologies of the brain. Clinically, his research focuses on extending and refining procedures for skull base and cerebrovascular disorders in order to minimize trauma to nearby brain structures. His basic research addresses the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of brain tumors in order to identify markers of progression and targets for treatment. He has published widely in peer-reviewed neurosurgery journals, as well as in the leading international science journal Nature. Dr. Klironomos is an active member of the Congress of Neurological Surgery and the North American Skull Base Society, where he has made numerous presentations.Dr. Klironomos is prized by patients because he brings the most up-to-date, research-based insights to the care of brain tumors and cerebrovascular disorders, and because he prioritizes clear and caring communication with those in his charge. Believing that preparing his patients mentally and emotionally is a central part of care, he explains each procedure in detail and discusses what can be expected during recovery. Dr. Klironomos has been recognized as a top surgeon by Castle Connolly and New York Magazine. For Dr. Klironomos, preparing the next generation of clinicians is an important part of his mission. He helps train physician assistants and nurses in the neurosurgery department at South Shore University Hospital and provides guidance to neurosurgery residents on cases at North Shore University Hospital. Dr. Klironomos graduated from the University of Patras School of Medicine in Patras, Greece, where he completed his residency in neurosurgery. Following his residency, he completed a fellowship in open and endoscopic skull base surgery and a second fellowship in surgical neuro-oncology at Toronto Western Hospital, University of Toronto. He also completed a fellowship in cerebrovascular and skull base neurosurgery at Northwell s North Shore University Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. After a brief time at another institution, Dr. Klironomos returned to Northwell in 2020.
