Dishes never shout. They have a pleasant tone, with touches that give them personality. There wisely is no fussing involved with a "colossal" lump crab cocktail ($18), which stands on its own without frills, save a scallion coulis and a spicy cocktail sauce for dipping as you will. Resonant white truffle essence and a garlic crouton are enough to make the mushroom bisque ($10) stand out, while lime mousseline plays that role for the fried calamari ($11).The fresh, delicate pastas are a must-order. All are made by hand, not with a machine, and come in either appetizer or entree portions. They range from old favorites such as rigatoni Bolognese ($11/$21) to more creative choices such as the slightly spicy white chocolate-infused fettuccine ($14/$26) decorated with jumbo shrimp and wild mushrooms in a light cream sauce. Pulled braised beef is a fitting match with tender orecchiette ($13/$25), a pairing aided by a tactful amount of mascarpone cheese and natural beef jus. There are many high-end entrees, with filet mignon and braised red cabbage ($36) at the top of the line.Beautifully cooked and sliced duck breast ($31), crisp on the outside and the right degree of rare on the inside, has a subtle Grand Marnier demi-glace, but what helps make this dish interesting is a clever sweet potato hash that includes pear and bok choy (quite an unusual element).Among the seafood options are Scottish salmon ($29), crusted with olive pesto for character and served with a red beet beurre blanc. At the lower end of the scale, your choices are a pasta main course or chicken Scarpariello ($24), a robust preparation that includes fennel sausage and hot cherry peppers. Vine isnt the destination for bargains; "relaxed," in this case, does not necessarily mean inexpensive.
