General Info
Dr. Cunningham works with each athlete to develop an individual treatment plan that emphasizes the least invasive treatments possible with a goal of minimal recuperation and downtime. He combines rigorous standards and quality of care with experience and insight, integrating the best new techniques into the care of each patient. His patients have included skilled athletes in football, basketball, baseball, and hockey, including members of the Dallas Cowboys at their Austin training camp, Austin Ice Bats hockey players, Southwestern University athletes, and many other college and high school athletes. He served for 15 years as a traveling team physician for the men’s alpine downhill US Olympic Ski Team, providing on-the-hill medical race coverage in North America and Europe, including qualifying races for the Winter Olympics. As a sports medicine specialist, Dr. Cunningham also treats many seasoned weekend warriors such as runners, skiers (downhill, snowboard, and water), and tennis and golf enthusiasts. After medical school and residency training in Dallas, he completed a sports medicine/knee fellowship with renowned orthopedic specialist Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, Colorado, and underwent further shoulder training in England and Canada. While with Dr. Steadman, the originator of the popular microfracture cartilage treatment technique, he developed a strong interest in the care of cartilage injuries and now has more than 20 years of experience with surgical microfracture and related procedures. In recent years, he has embraced cutting-edge techniques such as cellular "stem cell' & PRP (platelet rich plasma) treatment, subchondroplasty, surgical cartilage repair and grafting, ACL knee & rotator cuff shoulder repair, for use in acute and chronic joint problems. He offers biologic/stem cell alternatives to knee, shoulder and hip replacement surgery.

Provided by Doctor.comI don't usually give reviews but after seeing Dr. Cunningham, for a second opinion, I was very pleased and compelled to let others know. I left his office each time well informed, including being advised upfront of the cost, which I did not have with previous dr. The staff is awesome as well.

Provided by Doctor.comDr. Cunningham performed a meniscus repair and prp injection. My recovery was very fast and easy. My knee has never felt better. Dr. Cunningham spent a lot of time with me in my appointments, thoroughly explaining his plan, my options, and recovery. He really is a fantastic surgeon, and he and his staff are very kind and professional. I had a great experience and trust him implicitly.

Provided by Doctor.comI'm eight weeks out from shoulder surgery and almost back to normal. I believe the use of Stem cell has made a huge difference. My recovery has been much faster than a friend who had surgery at the same time without the use of stem cell.

Provided by Doctor.comThe initial thought was an 80% rotator cuff tear. It ended up being 100% and I needed smoothing of bone. Dr. Cunningham gave me great info and took the time to explain what was going on. I had PRP in my hip earlier in the year. I took his advice and did it with my shoulder, also. The physical therapist commented that my recovery was *way* beyond normal and after five weeks I already have 100% range of motion over my head. Angelique, Bill, and Sergio (his staff) have been helpful, professional, and always willing to answers questions and explain the procedures.
