Founded in 1972, the Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs, maintains and improves roads and bridges throughout the state of Georgia. It has a network of consultants and contractors and works with federal, state and local agencies and organizations. The department maintains a staff of more than 6,000 employees. The department is responsible for waterways, including intercoastal waterway and the Savannah and Brunswick ports.
