The Detroit Pistons are a National Basketball Association team in possession of three national championships: in 1989, 1990 and 2004. The team headquarters is located in Auburn Hills, Mich. Detroit's NBA Finals MVP's consist of Joe Dumars in 1989, Isiah Thomas in 1990 and Chauncey Billups in 2004. Other notable players with retired numbers include Vinnie Johnson, Bob Lanier, Dave Bing and Bill Laimbeer. Automobile-piston magnate Fred Zollner launched the club in 1941 and christened it the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. The Pistons joined the National Basketball League, a circuit that consisted primarily of teams fielded by Midwest corporations. Following the 1949 playoffs the NBL and BAA merged to form the NBA. The Detroit Pistons are currently a member of the Eastern Conference s Central Division.
