I resided in Sandpiper Apartments (they rebranded as Cooperwood to escape previous poor reviews) for several months. I first signed a lease for an apartment last year, then when I arrived to claim my apartment, I was told I had not signed a lease and they did not have an apartment for me. I showed my copy of the lease, and the property manager told me that they would find me another apartment in the complex. Upon entering the new unit (after signing a new lease), I discovered maintenance workers trying to quickly get an apartment ready that was very obviously not finished being renovated. There was a gaping hole in the shower wall (about two feet by three feet, with exposed pipes) and water damage on the bathroom ceiling. The bathroom was filthy and I didn't have a shower for three days after move in, with contractors in and out for 10+ hours a day. I also witnessed a maintenance worker using White Out to cover a chip in the stove.Over the next month, most of the problems inside the unit were slowly resolved. I was never compensated for the unit not being ready, let alone given an apology. In late 2016, 10-15 cars were broken into in the parking lot. I called or visited the office at least 4 times, asking how they were going to resolve the issue and was told that the only solution would be to take more "personal responsibility," but they might be installing camera or lighting. Neither of these latter solutions came to be. Upon move out, I cleaned my apartment and left it in far better shape than I had found it in. Now, however, I am being charged extravagant cleaning and painting fees. I have visited the office of the complex and they refuse to talk to me about the bill because "it's in corporate's hands" even as they acknowledge that the charges are unfair. I have exchanged several emails with the corporate office who has told me that my lease requires a a "licensed, bonded contractor" to clean the unit. Upon reviewing my lease, it does not say this it seems the corporate office is being deliberately misleading. The charges in this case are excessive and uncalled for, especially given the unprofessional manner in which this company has acted over the last year.
