Public Broadcasting Service founded in 1969, headquartered in Alexandria, Va., is a private, nonprofit media network owned and operated by the nation's 349 public television stations. The noncommercial television service is available to 100 million people, more than 99 percent of American homes and an increasing number of digital multimedia households. PBS oversees program acquisition, distribution and promotion; education services; new media ventures; fundraising support; engineering and technology development; and video marketing. It provides quality TV programming and related services to 169 noncommercial and 348 member stations serving all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa. Programs such as Sesame Street, Masterpiece Theatre, NOVA, Reading Rainbow and Clifford the Big Dog are among PBS award-winning programs.
