- Child AbuseThe first type are cases charging physical child abuse. These charges in these cases are often exaggerated or involve lawful corporal punishment. Photos are often not accurate and made to cause alleged injuries to look worse than they truly are. Social workers are often involved working with police detectives. Experience dealing with them is often most helpful. Often parenting plans can get worked out without prejudice to the criminal charges. Often medical experts can be helpful to prepare a defense. We offer referrals to counselors to help keep family’s together and give the courts better sentencing options in the event the charges are proven by the prosecution.
- Criminal DefenseAnyone accused of a crime in the military is automatically assigned a military lawyer. However, you also have the right to hire a civilian lawyer. - DUI/DWIYou are not summoned to an MVA hearing. They are held at your request, which must be made within certain time limits. If you are charged with DUI, for instance, and you are given a notice of driver’s license suspension by the arresting officer, you must act quickly. If you try to schedule a hearing after 30 days have elapsed, your request will be refused. Your suspension will be automatic, starting 46 days after the day of your arrest. If you wait more than 10 days to request a hearing, you may not be able to drive from the 46th.
- Traffic ViolationsDue to the serious potential penalties involved, we are often retained to defend serious traffic violations, including drunk driving (DUI) cases, especially those which involve accidents, injuries or prior offenses which significantly increase the potential for serious punishment. Maryland law also provides for significant criminal and administrative penalties for driving without a license, on a suspended license or for driving without auto insurance. Therefore, we are often asked to defend these types of cases in our practice at MVA hearings.
- Sex CrimesMilitary courts have taken a harsh approach to child pornography cases. Cases in which evidence was quite inclusive have nevertheless led to the end of careers and often to prison time. In 2012, changes were made to the UCMJ by executive order. These changes redefined the prosecutorial requirements for child pornography prosecutions in the military.

- RobberyA woman has been sentenced to life in prison by a Maryland court after being convicted of the murder of her husband on Nov. 4. Prosecutors say that the woman hired another man to kill her husband at his Towson gas station. The murder was crafted, they say, to look like a robbery attempt. At her trial, the woman testified that her deceased husband verbally, mentally and physically abused her for years. Her attorney put forth the argument that the she planned her husband’s murder in self-defense.

- White Collar CrimesMuch white collar crime involves allegations of fraud — financial advantage obtained by deception. Allegations of fraud can be made against almost anybody — salespersons, physicians, engineers, accountants, business managers or bookkeepers. Though white collar offenses are not violent, federal and state prosecutors treat them as very serious offenses that can often result in significant penalties, including imprisonment.
- Theft
- MisdemeanorsAggravated felonies, which may include offenses actually defined as misdemeanors. This category includes criminal acts that result in a sentence of a year or more of imprisonment even if the sentence is suspended.
- EmbezzlementEmbezzlement is misappropriation of the funds that have been entrusted to you. Very often the accused has held an upper-level position such as chief financial officer or controller. Another form of embezzlement is simple employee theft — taking petty cash, cheating on expense accounts, or taking expensive company assets, like cars or computers or mission-critical data, home with you.
- Drug CrimesMany times charged alongside drug possession, another federal drug crime is drug manufacturing. This includes manufacturing illegal substances in places of operation such as factories, warehouses, other large buildings, sheds, multiple apartments and other units where drugs are manufactured and then distributed for sale. If you are facing drug manufacturing charges under federal prosecution, it is imperative that you seek knowledgeable and experienced defense counsel immediately. Some of the harshest penalties are under federal drug laws.
- AssaultAssault and battery often appear together, but they represent two separate crimes. Assault essentially is an attempt to touch or harm another person without their consent, and battery is the actual unlawful touching of another person. Aggravated assault, or first-degree assault is a more serious form of assault, often involving the use of a weapon or means likely to cause serious bodily injury to another. Simple assault may be charged when actions do not involve use of a weapon or are relatively minor.
- MurderFirst-degree murder charges are arguably the most serious charges an individual can face. The aspects of co-conspirator liability also come into play here. Co-conspirator liability works on the premise that the person who conspires with, solicits or encourages the other person to commit a crime is as guilty as the person who actually commits the crime. Conspiracy to commit murder is a crime in of itself; if that murder is actually committed, both persons involved are guilty regardless of who actually committed the crime. Here, the woman hired a man to murder her husband. The murder was carried out; therefore, the woman has been deemed guilty of conspiracy and first-degree murder even though she did not actually commit the murder herself.

- ShopliftingIf the state has a strong case, we will look at steps that can minimize the consequences if you are found guilty. There are treatment programs for shoplifting and other theft and fraud cases, and enrolling in such a program can sometimes cause the state to elect not to prosecute the case. In an employee embezzlement case, arranging for a restitution agreement can be a big factor in obtaining a suspended sentence or no jail time.
- Forgery
- Money LaunderingMoney laundering is taking money that has been obtained illegally and making it appear as if it was obtained legally. It is never a simple matter, and generally requires a series of transactions involving multiple accounts. It is very common in organized crime cases, where cash flow is difficult to explain.
- ManslaughterAccording to news reports, all three of the passengers who died were also intoxicated at the time of the crash — a factor that may have played a part in the sentencing. The driver was charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of leaving the scene of a potentially fatal crash. According the Washington Post, the driver’s lawyer told the review panel that a surviving passenger had heard the driver yell “Everybody run!” after the crash, suggesting that he did not understand the gravity of what had occurred.
