  . Ronald Smith accused of second-degree murder and robbery for the beating death of a marijuana dealer in Juneau in 2000. Verdict at trial: Guilty; however, the conviction was reversed on appeal because the trial court allowed the introduction of impermissible evidence over defense counsel’s objections.

  . Jeremy McAnulty was charged with first-degree murder for the shooting death and chainsaw dismemberment of Sean Wilson in Big Lake in 1997. Outcome: After seven full days of deliberation the jury could not reach a unanimous decision, and the court declared a mistrial. McAnulty later made a plea agreement for second-degree murder and a sentence of 45 years.
