Alaska United Fiber Optic Cable System is a fiber-optic communication network that connects Alaska with other U.S. states. The system utilizes undersea and terrestrial connections to extend fiber optics. It includes cable landing stations that feature more than 60 optical amplifiers. Alaska United Fiber Optic Cable System also supports wavelength division multiplexing. It is a synchronous optical network-based system and is divided into AU-North, AU-East and AU-West. The system serves the Internet, video, voice and data markets. Alaska United Fiber Optic Cable System is owned and operated by GCI, which is a publicly traded company that provides voice, video and data communication services for residential, commercial and government customers.
